The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in Anguilla has prsented a cheque for EC 1,500 dollars to Ms Kara Hughes on behalf of her sister Ms Kemba Hughes who is in university in Canada. Kemba Hughes was the second place winner in the ECCB 2013/2014 Essay Competition.

“We would like to say congratulations to Kemba. You have done yourself proud, your parents and Anguilla as a whole,” Mrs Patricia Payne-Webster, Acting Resident Representative at the agency said.
Head of the English Department Mrs Rita Carty who is responsible for assisting the students in the essay competition praised Kemba on her achievement.
She also took the opportunity to encourage students to participate in the 2014/2015 essay competition.
“We are hoping that the fact that Kemba has been successful will help motivate other students to participate in the upcoming competition,” she commented.

In the 2014/2015 OECS Competition students will have the opportunity to write on one of the following topics –:
1 Mass Media have great influence in Shaping young People’s ideas, choices and social development;
2 Given the Advancement in communication and technology, the current policies regarding students’ use of cell phones at school need to be revised
3 – A good character is more important than academic qualifications for young people who aspire to be political leaders in the OECS.
The essay competition is open to students of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union between the ages of 12 to 19.

First place will be $2,500; second place $1,500 and third place $1,000.

Essays must be submitted no later than Friday 27th March 2015.
