The Comprehensive Learning Centre at North Hill, whose Founder and Managing Director is Mrs Sandra York-Gumbs, is continuing to make inroads in various aspects of academic education in Anguilla. This is being achieved through the dedication of the local institution and a strong cadre of lecturers in several professional fields.
The Centre turned out its most recent batch of graduates at the 12th Award Ceremony on Saturday, November 29, at the Teachers’ Resource Centre. Among the graduates was Mrs Cleo Fleming, the only student to obtain an Associate Degree in General Studies. She also recieved a Diploma. Two other students were also awarded Diplomas. They were Don Fleming and Carlos Charles.
Mrs York-Gumbs gave a detailed account of the performance of students considered to be the cream of the crop, as follows: “In the 2013-14 academic year, some 180 learners joined us for various educational courses and training, with the larger group wishing to join the Caribbean Examination Council programmes at the CSEC and CAPE levels. We saw 24 students undertake various courses including Law, Sociology, Economics, Accounting, Pure Maths, Caribbean Communication Studies, and Management of Business at the CAPE level. In a grand display of gratitude, 19 of them resoundingly rose to the challenge and made their lecturers proud.
“I would dare say that the proudest of all the teachers may have been Mrs Sherma Blaize whose 5 law students returned results of 100% passes and they did it in grand style with three ones, one two and one three. The other students made sure that they stayed on top of the game and only MOB (Management of Business), Math and Sociology did not have 100% passes as well.”
During the graduation ceremony, a number of students gave short presentations relating to their experiences, personal and professional development. The feature address was delivered by Mr Marcel Fahie, a lecturer at the Comprehensive Learning Centre and a Professional Consultant in various fields including economics, business and personnel development and training. He spoke at length on Gratitude Matters, a common but important area of life akin to the principles of virtue and professional development.
The Chairman of the Award Ceremony was Mr Rommel Hughes, a Lecturer at the Centre. The distribution of Certificates and Awards was performed by Mr Bernard Wattley and Mrs Julienne Weekes, CLC Lecturers.
