The expanding “St Maarten Girls Night Out” group has shared the proceeds from a recent function it held, with recipients in the half-French and half-Dutch territory and Anguilla.

The recipient, of US $300 in Anguilla, is the Cancer Society which has just been observing Breast Cancer Awareness Week. The money was part of an amount raised from an event in St Maarten in which a number of Anguillian young women participated, and with sponsorship from several local businesses.

“The St Maarten Girls Night Out is happy to donate part of its silent auction proceeds to the Anguilla Cancer Society,” said Ogechi Anyanwu, CEO of the organisation. “We were truly overwhelmed, humbled and inspired by the participation of the Anguilla business community. We wanted to show our gratitude and felt that the Anguilla Cancer Society is the perfect recipient.
The women group expressed a desire “to contribute, even in a small way, to educate the community and raise awareness to the importance of early detection of breast cancer, and to help equip Caribbean women to combat this devastating disease.”
The St Maarten women’s organisation added: “We want to thank the Anguilla Tourist Board, La Vue Boutique Inn, Hughes Medical Centre, Viceroy Anguilla, CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa, Anacaona Hotel, Dolphin Discovery Anguilla, Calypso Charters Anguilla, Shoal Bay Villas and Paradise Cove Resort for their contribution to the success of SXM Girls Night Out 2014.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Jennifer Gumbs, President of the Anguilla Cancer Society, said she was grateful for the kindness and thoughtfulness of the donors to such an important cause in Anguilla.

The St Maarten women’s visit to Anguilla was facilitated by Ms Patricia Harrigan, an Anguillian associate and supporter of the group.
