The Anguilla Youth Sailing Club (AYSC) sent four sailors and a junior coach to participate in the Club Nautico de San Juan, Puerto Rico, International Regatta on January 31 through February 2. In addition to a valuable experience in Puerto Rico, the sailors did an excellent job and performed well in the events.

In the Laser Radial class, Hasani Hennis won sixth place. Huekeemi Hughes won first place in the 13 to 15 years-old Optimist Red Fleet class and Renee Thomas placed third. Peter Webster Wiggin won second place in the Optimist ‘Green’ fleet, with two wins and four second-place finishes in the six races. This is Peter’s first award in a major regatta.

The Junior coach, Thomas Maccow, was very pleased with the overall results and reported that the sailors were all very appreciative towards our generous hosts in San Juan, who provided lodging and outstanding hospitality for them aboard a yacht in the harbor.

The San Juan Regatta is the first event after Anguilla’s annual Dinghy Regatta held on January 18. There are additional youth regattas in St Maarten, St Barths and St Croix later in the season in which the Anguilla sailors will participate.
