For the first time, in the history of carnival in Anguilla, and virtually at the beginning of the year, there has been an announcement of the contestants in the Miss Anguilla Queens Pageant in the summer.
The announcement on Thursday, January 9, stated that six young ladies, apparently found with much ease this year, will be entering the 2014 pageant. The contestants made their first appearance that evening at La Vue “in collaboration with their jazz at the garden event.”
A press release issued this week, announcing the names of the Miss Anguilla contestants, stated as follows:
“The reigning Miss Anguilla, Amethyst Davis, hosted the event. Minister of Culture, Jerome Roberts, Mr Jerry Dice Richardson, the newly-appointed Anguilla National Carnival Chairman, and Miss Lisa Rey, Queens Committee Chairperson, gave brief remarks.
“The ladies then drew their numbers and were presented with their sashes with the help of the reigning Miss Tiny Tott, Saalliha Abdur Raheen. The contestants, by number, are Shereena Richardson, Melisa Webster, Kennelva Brooks, Moralla Leduc, Taryn Gumbs and Jahia Semeria-Esposita.
“The contestants then officially introduced themselves and signed their contracts for the pageant. Over the next few months the Committee hopes to work closely with the contestants through motivational/inspirational speech, interview and modelling workshops.
“The queens will compete in seven segments: swimsuit, costume, introductory speech, talent, recycle wear, evening wear and interview. The swimsuit and costume competition will be held on Sunday, July 27, at 5.30 pm and the remainder of the show will be held on Thursday, August 7, at 8 pm. Both shows will take place at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre.
“The Committee also hopes to launch what they term ‘The Queens Experience’ in February. The Committee extends many thanks to the persons who attended the cocktail; the chaperons, as well as those who contributed to making the event a huge success, among them being La Vue/Flavours, Larry’s Dell, Tropical Treats, Mini Lisa’s and Nails R Hair.”
