The Rotary Club of Anguilla on Wednesday September 18 donated dictionaries to the Grade 2 students of the Adrian T Hazel School. It is part of the Club’s Literacy Outreach Programme and dictionaries are to be presented to all Grade 2 students throughout the island in the public and private schools.
District Governor Jeremy Hurst and Assistant District Governor Rebecca Low were present for the occasion and presented the books to the students. Mr Hurst said that he was responsible for clubs in ten countries in the region and most are involved in a similar project.
President of the Anguilla Rotary Club Lindel Brooks noted: “This is one of the many community based projects that the Rotary Club will be undertaking as we fully embrace the theme for this Rotary year which is: ‘Engage Rotary – Change Lives.” The dictionaries in Anguilla were funded by Club members and a Club in England.
Hurst told the students that they were very lucky to live in a beautiful island like Anguilla and that they must take care of the dictionaries – use them everyday to look up words for spelling and meanings.
Seymour Hodge, past president of the Anguilla Rotary Club, read the Rotary 4 Way Test to the children and urged them to remember it. He said that literacy is one of the main focuses of Rotary International.

While in Anguilla, the District Governor and his wife, and Assistant Governor, visited Governor Christina Scott, the Education Department and WISE (Workshop Initiative for Support in Education) Centre – as well as attended a meeting of Rotary members at a dinner at Flavours Restaurant in the evening.
