Anguilla’s Summer Festival ended successfully and without any incident. The festivities were well attended and attracted many visitors and residents.
One of the events that usually attract our regional brothers and sisters is the Leeward Island Calypso Show. However, missing from this year’s competition were the crowd favorites and the reigning Kings – Konris out of St Kitts and De Bear out of Antigua – who jointly held the crown for 2012/2013.
Winning the competition for the first time in 17 years was the USVI. Patrick ‘Soljah’ Farrell captured the crown with his songs ‘Sing Soljah Sing’ and ‘Look Wah We Come To’.
Anguilla’s recently crowned calypso monarch Jerome ‘Ranger’ Vanterpool placed second with his songs ‘When will we be paid’ and ‘World of Turmoil’.
Placing third was Carlisle ‘Binghi’ Pemberton of Nevis – ‘Life for de poor man’ and ‘We want we SIDF money’.
Meawhile, in other carnival results, the bandorama champion for 2013 is the X-rated Band. It scored 237 points playing the test tune “Anguilla Mas” by the Mussington Brothers.
X-rated also won the prize money of five thousand EC dollars.
The title of band clash champion once again went to Pantha Vibes International – PVI. It is the fourth consecutive time PVI has won that title.
The band cash prize totaled some ten thousand EC dollars.
De Movements Band (DMB) placed second with 394 points while Exodus HD scored 309 points to place third.
Exodus also won Road March which was judged during Jouvert on Monday 5th August.
Amethyst Davis of Blowing Point is the 2013/2014 Miss Anguilla pageant winner. She was crowned by the 2012/2013 Ms Anguilla Taitu Goodwin. Second was Ms Sincia Brooks of Katouche. The other contestants were Amasha Richards of North Hill and Ms Vanessa Edwards of The Valley.
The contestants competed in Swimwear, Introductory Speech, Recycle wear, Talent, Costume, Evening wear, and Interview.
The Ms Anguilla Pageant was held under the theme ‘Embrace Your Dreams’.
Another attraction during the summer festivities was boat racing.
Real Deal is the 2013 Champion of Champions after beating De Tree at the finish stakes by half a boat-length on Sunday afternoon.
Placing third was the Viking, fourth the Sonic, and fifth the Light and Peace.
The race – the last of the official activities for the 2013 Summer Festival and the boat racing season – started in Sandy Ground with 13 boats and went around the south coast of Anguilla and back to Sandy Ground.
De Tree dominated the first place positions for the August week boat races – placing first in the Heineken August Sunday, August Tuesday – Island Harbour, and August Wednesday.
The Real Deal placed first in the August Monday Sandy Ground race.
There was no boat race on August Thursday due to inclement weather conditions.
The results of Parade of Troupes.
The Players Troupe captured first place with 597 points. They also won the prize for the largest and most colourful troupe.
Second place went to Fantasy 264 with 591 points and third place to FWD with 547 points.
Karla Rey was named Queen of the Band.
