One of the matters on which the Commissioner of Police spoke to the media about on Wednesday, July 31, involved the security arrangements for the carnival and boat-racing events.
He warned that the Police, working with various branches of the Force, as well as with J. T. R. Security, would have a heavy presence at all functions. “We will be under no stress, and in no hurry, to grant bail to persons caught, arrested and charged with any violent acts whatsoever,” he emphasised. “We will vigorously oppose bail to any persons found with any illegal weapons enroute to, or at, any of the venues where the summer festivities are taking place. There will be no excuse for persons coming to any of the functions with a knife, a gun, a machete or any instrument that can be used to inflict harm on any person. If you are a farmer and you are going to a venue with your farming equipment, leave it at home.”
Mr Proctor said that his Department’s robust operation plan would enable the Force to police the entire eleven days of carnival and boat-racing activities. “All we are asking of the general public…is for their continued support in reporting any suspicious activities day or night at any of the activities,” he stated.
With respect to J’ouvert morning, Commissioner Proctor stressed that this event must begin at 4 o’clock at Landsome Bowl and end at Road Bay by 10 o’clock, allowing for the commencement of the August Monday Caribbean Party. He warned that this function would also see a robust police presence, with officers and security personnel well-equipped to handle any disturbances.
