The final debates of the Tenth Annual Competition for 2013 staged by the New Young Progressive Debaters (NYPD) were an event of much excitement at the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium on Tuesday evening. The NYPD is a Campus B-based debating club.
The topic of the debate finals was: “The advancement of the cellular phone has had a more positive than negative impact on the Anguillian society.” The moderator of the debate, Colin Johnson, in his characteristic entertaining style, said the competition had gone through several stages involving various debaters – and that the finals were an effort to discover the “best of the best” debaters.
The finals involved four debaters. The debate ended with the two males, Juron Dupie and Xaviere Devonish, defeating their female opponents, Prisca Ogolo and Lucyallis Pina, by a score of 149 to 115 points. Devonish was adjudged the best speaker for his dynamic performance.
The Judges were Chelsey Hughes, Keivanee Lake and Michelle Queeley (Head Judge).
