The Department of Health Services in Anguilla has reported the success of a surgical operation carried out on a cancer patient in Anguilla. Performed at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the surgery marks a historic milestone for the first laparoscopic hemicolectomy procedure done locally.
This operation, laparoscopic hemicolectomy, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure aimed at removing a cancerous segment of the colon. The technique is particularly useful for patients with resectable colon cancer, and it aims to ensure that the tumor and surrounding healthy tissue are removed completely, thus reducing the risk of any cancerous recurrence.
The successful procedure, led by Anguilla’s Chief Medical Surgeon, Dr. Manuel Gutierrez, took place on Monday, March 9th. Dr. Gutierrez carried out the procedure in close collaboration with the anesthesia team as well as the Operating Room nursing staff.
In a letter addressed to the Senior Ministerial Advisor to Health, Mr. Evans McNiel Rogers, Dr. Gutierrez expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering support of the scrub nurses team and the exceptional professionalism demonstrated by the anesthetists. The surgeon emphasized that their collective effort was instrumental in accomplishing this significant achievement.
The surgery was completed without complications and with minimal blood loss. The patient is now at a two-week post- operation status, positively evaluated in the out-patient clinic and continues to recover well with no reported complications.
Dr. Gutierrez noted that this accomplishment marks a major step forward in the development of minimal invasive oncologic surgery in Anguilla. Procedures of this kind of complexity are typically performed in large specialized medical centers.
Successfully completing such an operation at the Princess Alexandra Hospital highlights not only the capability of the local healthcare system, but it also indicates potential for continued growth and advancement in the medical field, locally.
