Stunning Arrogance
The Definitive Agreement lists private property that must be acquired prior to the process reaching the so called Milestone 1 at which point the developer SF Marina would pay the government of Anguilla a paltry 7.2 million US Dollars and gain full title to all the land and dominion over Road Bay.
One can only imagine that the agreement was drafted by the developer’s lawyers because it would be a display of incredible arrogance if the then government had arbitrarily decided on this course without notification or discussion with a single land owner.
The fact is that the government concurred with the developer and even stated that the government would, if necessary, enact special legislation to force the land owners to comply. 16 lots of land on the north side of the pond extending out to the bay are earmarked to give up either 50 feet or 100 feet.
If government can enact legislation to force a land owner to sell for the purposes of aiding a private commercial enterprise, then all Anguillians had better step up and roundly condemn this idea before the government can get their teeth into it.
There are also parcels of land in the area of the Sandy Ground police station and these include the historic house of Sir Emile Gumbs. What intolerable arrogance was in play when that was included in the definitive agreement without even a courtesy call to the dear man’s heirs.
Not acceptable governance we say.
