The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla is collaborating with the Department of Social Development, the Organization of Early Childhood Education and Day Care Providers on Anguilla to launch its Certificate Programme in Early Childhood Education Care and Development. Some thirteen representatives from local Pre-Schools and Day Care Centres were on hand for the presentation at the UWI Open Campus Anguilla on Thursday, 12 July 2018.
The Certificate in Early Childhood Education Care and Development is part of the University’s local Continuing and Professional Development face-to-face programmes. It seeks to provide an alternative learning pathway for early childhood workers and others who wish to undertake further studies in early childhood education. It is also designed to expose individuals who are new, or are already working in the field, to the fundamentals of early childhood care and education. The four-course programme includes two practicums and focuses on the basic principles of operating an early childhood institution, health, safety and nutrition, working with Family and Community, as well as the basic needs of children with respect to the Articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
In her remarks, Director of Family and Social Services with oversight of the Day Care Centres, Mrs. Daphne Hodge, applauded the Child Care Providers for their commitment to the continued improvement of their skills, including their positive response to the latest professional development opportunity. Mrs. Hodge also commended the UWI Open Campus for reaching out and offering the specialised training for Day Care and Early Childhood Care Providers.
President of the Organization of Early Childhood Education, Miss Itasha Webster also had words of encouragement for the participants. Teacher Itasha, who is a recent graduate of the UWI’s Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development and Family Studies programme, highlighted the important role of Child Care Providers and pledged the support of the organisation.
Manager for the UWI British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming Banks provided an overview of the programme and expressed the University’s appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the Department of Social Development and the Organization of Early Childhood Education.
The programme is scheduled to begin in during the week of 11th September 2018 and other interested persons are invited to contact the UWI Open Campus at anguilla@open.uwi.edu (telephone 497-8156) for further information.
