The mysteries of Anguilla’s deep waters were brought vividly to the surface on Wednesday, 28th January 2026, when the Blue Belt Programme’s Beyond the Reef Caribbean Exhibition opened its doors at Johnno’s Restaurant as part of Blue Week 2026. The exhibition gathered government officials, environmentalists, members of the Beyond the Reef Caribbean team and the wider public, creating a space where cutting-edge marine science met national conversation about sustainability, resilience and shared responsibility.

The exhibition followed closely on the heels of a landmark scientific expedition that began on Friday, 17th January 2026, when a team of 25 scientists from Anguilla and the United Kingdom departed Sandy Ground aboard the British research vessel RRS James Cook. Their journey marked the start of 12 days of pioneering research under the UK-funded Beyond the Reef – Blue Belt Expedition, the first Caribbean expedition in the programme’s ten-year history. Her Excellency the Governor Julia Crouch, Deputy Governor Perin Bradley, the Honourable Premier Cora Richardson-Hodge, and Ministers were present to witness Anguillian scientists joining the ship, a moment symbolising both collaboration and local ownership of the research taking place in Anguilla’s waters.

Over the course of the expedition, scientists mapped more than 2,000 square kilometres of Anguilla’s seafloor for the first time, using advanced multibeam technology that employs sound waves to create highly detailed maps of the seabed. These maps reveal seafloor topography, biodiversity composition and potential navigational hazards, while also offering insights into how offshore environments contribute to Anguilla’s disaster resilience. Vast areas previously unseen were brought into focus, transforming abstract depths into tangible knowledge.

The research went far beyond mapping alone. Using CTD water samplers, scientists recorded how temperature, algae and oxygen levels change with depth, while collecting water samples for detailed analysis. Hundreds of photographs and hours of video footage captured the seabed and open water, unveiling hidden habitats and the marine life within them. Species observed in their natural environments included wenchmen snappers, ocean triggerfish, Coryphaenoides species, anemones and shrimp, offering a rare glimpse into ecosystems that exist far beyond the familiar shoreline.

Fisheries science was a central pillar of the expedition. Fisheries acoustics were used to estimate the abundance and distribution of pelagic fish from the surface to the seabed across key fishing grounds and selected Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) on the Anguilla, Crocus and Malliwana Banks. Complementing this, a mid-water trawl net sampled small fish, crustaceans and molluscs living at depths between approximately 200 and 1,000 metres, helping scientists better understand offshore ecology and the early life stages of commercially important fish and lobster.

Speaking at the exhibition, Melissa Meade underscored the deeper meaning of the work being shared. “One of the acts is making the gift of ordinance. It reminds us that our economy and our well-being are inseparable from one another,” she said. She highlighted that some of the world’s most advanced scientific equipment had been operating “right here in our backyard”, with UK scientists working side by side with local experts. “This Blue Belt belongs to all residents of Anguilla and today’s expo is about sharing that knowledge with you. Blue Week is a call to action… Together, let’s ensure our blue wealth continues to support our blue health.”

Members of the research team echoed that sense of achievement and discovery. Alison Stoker, of the UK, described the ten days at sea as “amazing”, noting that despite challenging weather at times, the team managed to cover the Anguilla Bank, British Bank, waters around Sombrero Island, the Anguilla Ridge and the Sombrero Trough. Equipment was deployed to depths of up to 3,000 metres, collecting seabed imagery, fisheries data and live water samples. “We’ve found some very interesting patterns in certain areas and some very interesting photography… and it just shows what an important ecosystem you have around your coastline – not just nearshore, but in the deep water too,” she said, adding that data analysis will continue throughout 2026 and into 2027.

A particular highlight of the exhibition was the display of deep-sea specimens collected during the expedition, presented by Anguillian scientist Jasmin Ruan. She explained the careful process behind each mid-water trawl, designed to protect delicate specimens and avoid unnecessary by-catch. Long hours were then spent in a chilled laboratory identifying, measuring and sampling organisms alongside colleagues from Anguilla and the Natural History Museum. Among the specimens was Cyclophonus, described as the most common vertebrate on Earth, alongside hatchetfish, unusual shrimp species and different stages of lobster larvae, illustrating life cycles rarely seen by the public. Ruan further stressed the importance of recognising offshore species as part of Anguilla’s natural heritage that also require thoughtful management.

The exhibition also shed light on the broader mission of the Blue Belt Programme, which has worked since 2016 with UK Overseas Territories to enhance the protection and sustainable management of marine environments, establishing nearly four million square kilometres of marine protected areas. Anguilla has been a partner since 2023, joining a global effort supported by organisations such as the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science and the Marine Management Organisation. The programme’s objectives span biodiversity protection, governance, managing human impacts, compliance, capacity building and ocean literacy.

As part of Blue Week 2026, observed under the theme “Our Blue Wealth, Our Blue Health: Securing a Sustainable Tide”, the exhibition formed one moment in a packed calendar of activities running from Monday, 26th January to Saturday, 31st January 2026. Together, these events underscore Anguilla’s growing commitment to science-based stewardship of its marine environment.
Meanwhile, the results of the team’s data analyses will be made available via the Blue Belt Programme’s Facebook page.

Award-winning Beach Enclave launches its bespoke villa resort concept in Anguilla. Located on the island’s iconic southwestern coast on Rendezvous Beach, Beach Enclave Anguilla is scheduled to open in the Winter of 2027/early 2028. Following an introduction of the property to invited guests on the evening of Wednesday, January 14th, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Government of Anguilla and Beach Enclave’s Principal, Vasco Borges. The ceremony of introduction was attended by numerous persons attached to the hospitality industry, and moderated by Beach Enclave’s Consultant Mrs. Janine Edwards of JanineConnects.
Mrs. Edwards describes the upcoming resort Beach Enclave as a visionary project that will take the Government of Anguilla and its people on a dynamic journey. She exclaimed: “This venture will make a significant mark on the socio-economic fabric of Anguilla while adding a brand new exciting ultra-villa resort concept to the island!”
Founder and CEO, Vasco Borges remarked: “The year 2026 will be an amazing year for Anguilla, because of this project, Beach Enclave. Today, we are here to sign an MOU for the project with the Government of Anguilla.
Describing Beach Enclave in a nutshell, Mr. Borges went on: “What we do is create villa resorts that combine the best of owning your private home with resort amenities. At Beach Enclave one can have all the guest services and amenities that they can expect at a five-star resort.”
He explained that this Beach Enclave concept started in 2014 in the Turks and Caicos Islands, where he now operates four award winning resorts, and he indicated that he is excited about bringing a similar resort image to Anguilla.
Mr. Borges expressed his gratitude to all those persons who played a part in making the Beach Enclave Anguilla project a reality. He said he is looking forward to start construction on the resort complex in this year, 2026.
In addressing the gathering, Minister of Tourism, the honorable Cardigan Connor, stated: “Today, it is all about Team Anguilla. The representation that we have here is indicative of the reality of working well together. And whether we think of the influence of the previous Government or this current Government, we consider that this project is like a relay; and we are all part of a winning team that will make Beach Enclave a reality here on our island.”
“I am proud of the quality that will come to Anguilla through Beach Enclave,” he said. “As Janine ran through the list of awards that Beach Enclave achieved in the TCI, I could see why Mr. Borges chose to establish such a resort here. Anguilla has achieved number one position in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda for five years, and we are a proud team who endeavours to improve on our successes. We are happy to have Mr. Borges and his associates for they bring to us quality that is depictive very much here in Anguilla. So, on behalf of our Premier, Cora Richardson-Hodge who is travelling, I say thanks to Beach Enclave.”
Minister of Economic Development Kyle Hodge, delivered comments as well: “I am extremely delighted to be taking part in this momentous occasion, the signing of an MOU between the Government of Anguilla and Beach Enclave, he said. “Some nine month ago, I first met Vasco and his team when they visited cabinet to introduce themselves and to present to us a general overview of this beautiful project…
“We have been quite busy since then, and I am pleased that we are able to reach a clear and mutual understanding, and I am happy that we were able to quickly overcome the challenges that we had in preparation for today.
“I had always looked forward to us reaching to this point,” Mr. Hodge said, “and I will be even more excited when we see boots on the ground, and excavators digging the trenches so that blocks can be laid and the concrete can be poured.”
Following their speeches, Minister Hughes, Minister Connor and Founder/CEO Mr. Borges ascended a wooden lookout perch to enact their signatures to the MOU on a specially draped table.
The Beach Enclave Resort will feature a select number of private four-to seven-bedroom residences as well as five beachfront and seven ocean-view villas, all designed by the acclaimed Blakstad Design Studio, known for its refined and timeless architectural style in the original design for Belmond Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel, in Anguilla. In addition, the resort will encompass a collection of expansive 2-bedroom casitas and hotel rooms. Guests will enjoy a full array of amenities inclusive of a Mediterranean Beach Club & Restaurant. Features will also include a state-of-the-art fitness centre, and a spa and wellness centre with sauna and ice plunge, as well as a racquet club featuring pickleball, tennis, and the first padel court in Anguilla.
Construction is expected to begin in September of 2026, with the opening scheduled for Winter 2027/early 2028.
Founder and CEO Mr. Borges claimed: “We couldn’t have a better setting for our first foray abroad – Anguilla has been close to my heart since my first trip 15 years ago, it has a warmth and beauty not easily matched”. “The timing couldn’t be better either, with the airport terminal and runway expansion offering easier access to our guests – we very much look forward to welcoming guests our clients soon to Beach Enclave Anguilla”.
Elaine Hearn of Properties in Paradise, the exclusive real estate broker for the project, adds “We are delighted to introduce this exceptional Beach Enclave villa resort to the Anguilla market. Set on the beautiful Rendezvous Bay, Beach Enclave Anguilla will represent a rare and unique opportunity. These villas will set a new benchmark for beachfront living, combining elegant design, outstanding management, and the signature Beach Enclave lifestyle. We are honoured to be entrusted with this exceptional project”.
As Beach Enclave prepares to welcome guests to Anguilla, it remains committed to the same level of exclusivity, care, and authenticity that has defined its presence in the Turks and Caicos Islands — and now, beyond. The expansion to Anguilla comes on the heels of the recent debut of The Reserve at Grace Bay by Beach Enclave, recently honoured with Robb Report’s Best of the Best award for the world’s top new villa. It also builds on a legacy of global recognition, including being named to Travel & Leisure’s World’s Best Awards and Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, and inclusion on the 100 Hotels of a Lifetime by National Geographic, cementing Beach Enclave’s position among the best hospitality brands in the world.

2025 has been a year or continued elevation for the employees at Four Seasons Resort and Residences! We have seen the promotion and transition of several employees and most recently we have been the proud recipient of two acclaimed awards at the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Gala Awards ceremony, namely, Conlloyd Gumbs as Supervisor of the Year and General Manager, Diego Stembert as Hotelier of the Year 2025!

Recognition as Hotelier of the year reflects Diego’s outstanding leadership, his commitment to our people, and his contribution to Anguilla’s tourism industry. Diego is a 30-year hospitality veteran whose worldwide experience has led him to his current role as General Manager of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla.

He joined Four Seasons in 2010 at Four Seasons Resort Nevis as Director of Rooms and has since held senior leadership roles across the brand, including General Manager at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora and Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires, as well as Hotel Manager at Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City. In Diego’s own words, “There is something particularly special about life on a tropical island; it is absolutely surreal to wake up to this paradise every day. We know that our guests choose to be here to celebrate some of their most momentous occasions, so it is our mission to ensure that their stay with us is perfection.”

Conlloyd quickly became a trusted leader within his department and throughout the Resort. His knowledge, skills and humility has earned [him] much respect at work and within the community. Conlloyd is passionate about helping youth develop their skills in mathematics and often encourages them to stay motivated to achieve their goals and dreams.

We are extremely proud of our Team and our many accomplishments throughout 2025. We look forward to greater achievements in 2026!

Lloyd International Airport took place on the evening of Friday December 12th 2025, with a large number of guests witnessing the auspicious event first hand, as they filled the entire grounds just outside the Departures Hall. Government officials, tourism industry personnel, aviation personalities, and community folk all had the opportunity to savor the landmark opening.
This significant occasion marked a transformative milestone, bringing Anguilla up to par with other airport facilities in the region, featuring a 48,000 square-foot terminal facility that is state- of-the-art and fit for purpose – a building which took only 20 months to construct.

Cutting of Ribbon

Methodist Minister, Rev. Wilmoth Hodge, offered a prayer of thanksgiving. The ceremonial proceedings were chaired by Radio Anguilla’s Director and Broadcaster, Farrah Banks. “It is an honour to be here this evening as we open this remarkable new chapter in Anguilla’s story,” she said. “This building is more than an airport facility. It is a gateway to opportunity, connection and growth.”
“Today, we celebrate the vision, dedication and collaboration that brought this project to life,” Ms. Banks reflected. “Thank you all for joining us as we officially open a space designed to welcome the world, support our community and help our future take flight,” she boldly declared.
Acting Director of Public Utilities and Project Liaison, Kendell Richardson in his overview of the project, commented: “I extend my sincere appreciation to the Government of Anguilla, the various ministries and statutory bodies, our contractors Aecon and Kelly Construction, our consultants Avia NG, all stakeholders and the people of Anguilla whose commitment and collaboration has transformed this vision into reality.”
“This project was born out of a clear and pressing need,” he continued. “We were required to modernize our airport infrastructure and create a gateway that reflects the beauty, warmth and ambition that is Anguilla. Our previous facility has served us well, but as tourism continues to grow and air connectivity evolves, we recognize the importance of delivering an experience that meets international standards and anticipate future demands.”
This is not just a building,” he observed. “It is a statement of confidence in Anguilla’s future. Every feature of this project was designed with the future in mind, ensuring flexibility, innovation and resilience for decades to come.”
“This facility offers a spacious and modern environment that enhances passenger comfort and operational efficiency,” Mr. Richardson continued. “A mezzanine level has been introduced featuring a bar and lounge overlooking the air-traffic side, creating additional space while offering passengers and the public a relaxing vantage point.”
“The Departure Hall can now accommodate over 240 seated passengers, ensuring comfort even during peak periods while maintaining a high level of service. Additional apron space is provided, just in time for the festive season,” he remarked.
“We have also upgraded our security screening systems both for carry-on and checked luggage, delivering faster, more accurate processing while meeting the highest international standards. This includes a CTX-5800 X-ray machine, capable of processing over 400 bags per hour. Then, there are two X-ray units for passenger screening which are equipped with automatic bin return systems and a full body scanner which enhances efficiency.”
Mr. Richardson took pride in the fact that the building was designed by local architect, Raul Vanterpool and his team at V-Architecture Design Studios.
Her Excellency the Governor Julia Crouch remarked: “Not long after I arrived in Anguilla, I asked a friend about Clayton J. Lloyd. I was told that Clayton flew small propeller airplanes between Anguilla and the neighbouring Islands. He connected people to hospitals and schools. He helped develop trade, connectivity, delivered vital supplies and searched for lost fishermen. It became clear to me that Clayton J. Lloyd was not just flying routes, but he was creating them.”
“And now we stand here today and see how that same dedication and hard work has created this beautiful new terminal. It is a worthy tribute to Clayton’s legacy,” she observed.
“This is the opening of a gateway to opportunities, connection and confidence in Anguilla’s future,” she continued, “and I want to offer congratulations to every single person involved in bringing this project to fruition.”
The Governor went on: “I wish to congratulate Ministers from all parties who had caught the vision and fought for the funding to make that vision a reality. I am grateful to the UK who was proud to give its support in the early stages of the Master Plan and the ground works. I commend all the public servants from across Governments who made the vision a reality with our commercial partners, Kelly Construction, Avia NG, and Aecon. You are not just partners, you are our friends.”
The Honourable Premier Cora Richardson-Hodge said that the new airport terminal marks another step in Anguilla’s on-going journey to transformation and progress: “This new terminal is a symbol of our ambition to embrace a new era of growth and development. It enhances safety, elevates the visitor and passenger experience, supports increased airlift and strengthens the foundation for sustainable tourism growth.”
The Premier also mentioned that the new airport terminal is expected to generate jobs, encourage investment, and reinforce the resilience and competitiveness of our economy. She noted that for decades the people of Anguilla, as well as investors and partners, who believed in our island, had envisioned an international airport that would reflect the quality of our tourism product and strengthen our economic prospects.
Other officials speaking at the ceremony included the Executive Airport Manager, Mr. Jabari Harrigan; Honourable Representative for District 4 (the district in which the airport is located) Mr. Cordell Richardson; the Honourable Representative for District 7, and Minister of Tourism, Mr. Cardigan Connor; and the Honourable Single Island-wide Representative and Minister of Infrastructure and Communication, Mr. Jose Vanterpool.
Eleven hard working stalwarts were honoured as outstanding pioneers and devoted employees of the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport. They had been influential in the operations of the airport’s services over the years – Mr. Kirland “Ramos” Carty; Mr. Kenneth “Kothcy” Rogers; Mrs. Evadne Richardson; Mr. Maurice Connor; Mr. Cardigan Gumbs; Mr. David Reid; Mr. Pieter Carter; Mr. Remington Lake; Ms. Clydella “Mim” Carty; Ms. Debrah Connor; and Mr. Fabian “Bead” Richardson (recognized posthumously).
The stately building was blessed through the prayers of Anglican Minister, Bishop Errol Brooks, after which Canon Reid Simon entered the edifice to sprinkle its interior with Holy Water.
The cutting of the ribbon was then carried out primarily by Captain Maurice Connor, Anguilla’s 3rd pilot; and Mr. David Reid, a longstanding baggage handler, flanked by their fellow-honourees.
Anguilla’s new Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport terminal building was then declared opened. The majority of attendees were afforded an opportunity to take a guided tour.
This was the first scheduled flight of the airline outside of Bermuda, directly to Anguilla, and a first for the airline’s growing footprint in the Caribbean region.

This milestone in Anguilla’s aviation history marks an important step in strengthening and enhancing air access to the island. The flight from Boston touched down at the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport at 4:15 pm.
On board the airline’s maiden voyage into Anguilla were the Honorable Minister of Tourism, Mr. Cardigan Connor and the Honourable Minister of Infrastructure and Communication, Mr. Jose Vanterpool. The two ministerial officials left the island for Boston on Monday, December 15th just to make contact with the airline’s personnel and to escort the passengers and crew to Anguilla, welcoming them to the new Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport terminal.

Construction is steadily advancing at Port Nimara, Anguilla’s first dedicated superyacht marina, with the developer signaling a phase-one completion and marina opening in the first half of 2027. Site works now underway include basin excavation and marine infrastructure manufacturing as the project moves from groundbreaking into full build-out.

The development, situated on the island’s southwest coast between Belmond Cap Juluca and Altamer near Maundays Bay, broke ground in December 2023 and has since entered active construction. The master plan calls for a mixed-use waterfront anchored by a mega-yacht marina and complemented by hotel, residential and retail amenities.
The excavation of the marina basin is in progress, while Swedish marine-engineering firm SF Marina is producing the floating concrete pontoons designed to handle heavy weather and superyacht loads. The marina build is being delivered in collaboration with Consigli Construction, and several local subcontractors.

Construction Site

When phase one opens, Port Nimara is planned to offer 118 berths for yachts up to 240+ feet, alongside an on-site customs and immigration facility. The wider programme envisions a five-star hotel, 18 beachfront villas and 45 hillside residences, positioning the property as both a yachting hub and luxury resort community. The hotel and beachfront villas are slated to follow after the marina’s opening.

Port Nimara is developed by South West Harbour, Inc., a Joint Venture between TEI Inc., SF Investments, the investment and development section of the SF Group in Sweden, with the participation of Anguilla based Antillean Developments. Independent outlets including Marina World, Boat International, Superyacht Times and Megayacht News have prominently echoed the development this year.

The project has been framed as a catalyst for the local economy, with estimates of around 300-500 jobs across marina operations, hospitality and supporting services during the phased opening window. Government and industry communications have tied the marina’s timeline to a broader tourism uplift and skills demand on island.
Strategically, Port Nimara sits about 26 nautical miles from St. Barths and 11 nautical miles from St. Maarten’s international airport, strengthening Anguilla’s role on the NE Caribbean superyacht circuit and providing quick access for owners and charter guests transiting the tri-island loop.

David Mizrahi, partner of South West Harbour and executive head of Port Nimara, emphasizes on resilient marine engineering and a “sustainable luxury” brief as dredging and civil works reshape the basin. Trade releases cite heavy-duty pontoons and coastal-conditions design as central to the marina’s operating profile once open.

As works continue through 2025/2026, the soft-opening period will lead into the phase-one handover in 2027, subject to construction progress and permitting. For now, the excavators, dredgers and fabrication orders suggest momentum behind a project set to make maritime history in Anguilla. portnimara.com

Members of the Anguilla Culinary Team departed the island on Thursday, July 24th to participate in Grill Fest, a highlight of St. Kitts’ annual Restaurant Week celebrations. Held on Saturday, July 26th, 2025, at Frigate Bay Lawn, the event brought together culinary talent and food lovers from across the region.
The Anguillian team was invited by the St. Kitts-Nevis Tourism Board to participate as special guests, offering attendees a delicious taste of Anguilla’s signature grilled dishes. This showcase opportunity highlighted Anguilla’s rich culinary heritage and growing reputation as a Caribbean food destination.
Anguilla’s culinary ambassadors included Kelston “Chef Sweets” Connor, Jamal Hodge, Raven James, and Kendrick Richardson, accompanied by grill master Jermain Hodge; known for his passion and experience in grilling traditions. While Grill Fest features a competitive element with regional chefs vying for titles in categories like fish, chicken, pork, and lobster, the Anguilla team did not compete for prizes this year. Instead, they proudly represented the island as cultural ambassadors, helping to elevate Anguilla’s visibility on the regional culinary stage. They eagerly anticipate returning to the event next year as competitors.
Organized under the auspices of the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association (AHTA), the team’s participation aligns with the AHTA’s mission to support and promote local talent within the hospitality sector. The AHTA continues to create pathways for chefs and service professionals to gain exposure and build networks across the region.

Cherecia Lewis, CEO of the AHTA, was present at the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport to see the team off. She shared her pride in the group’s role: “We are proud to support these talented culinary ambassadors who represent the very best of Anguilla’s food culture. The AHTA is committed to fostering professional growth and regional exposure for our hospitality talent.”
The Anguilla Culinary Team’s presence at Grill Fest demonstrated the island’s commitment to culinary excellence and regional collaboration.

The Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB) has once again thrown its enthusiastic support behind the island’s most anticipated cultural extravaganza, the Anguilla Summer Festival, by committing a generous EC$70,000. This substantial contribution, announced at a lively presentation held at Leon’s at Malliouhana on Sunday, 13th July 2025, also extends to beloved carnival staples such as the Poker Run, Eyes Wide Shut, and the Anguilla Boat Racing Association, ensuring these cherished events continue to thrive.

“We are always happy to support premier carnival events and anything that has to do with our culture,” declared Mr. Jameel Rochester, Director of Tourism at the Anguilla Tourist Board. The Anguilla Tourist Board’s involvement is part of its broader mission to promote not only travel to Anguilla, but sustainable, authentic cultural experiences.

Mr. Rochester continued, beaming with national pride, “Anguilla was recently rated number one best destination in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas by Travel + Leisure readers. And that’s something for us to be grateful for as a destination. Anguilla has continuously shown that it’s our people, our resilience and our unique experiences that put us ahead of other destinations. And these are what we want to continue to promote in our destination as well.”

With these encouraging words, Mr. Rochester then called forward the representatives from the Anguilla Boat Racing Association, Anguilla Summer Festival, Poker Run, and Eyes Wide Shut, to collectively receive the EC$70,000 cheque. It was more than just a handover – it was a reminder that Carnival isn’t just a party; it’s a preservation of identity, a boost to the local economy, and a time when Anguillians at home and abroad come together for something bigger than themselves.

The spirit of collaboration and community support didn’t stop there. The team at Malliouhana Resort offered invaluable accommodation contributions. Mr. Fitzroy “Briggy” Tomlinson, chairman of the Anguilla Summer Festival, was called upon to sign the necessary documents alongside Mr. Logan Miller, Managing Director at Malliouhana, solidifying their generous support for Carnival.
Ms. Meesha Richardson, Sales and Marketing Manager at Malliouhana, shared her delight at their involvement. “I am so proud to be a part of a team that understands the significance of contributing to the Anguilla Summer Festival.”

She continued, “Every year we’re going to try our best to contribute to Carnival and the arts and culture in Anguilla, because it is something that’s so significant.”

Ms. Patricia Bygrave, General Manager of Long Bay Villas by Malliouhana and Santosha Villa Estate by Malliouhana, also presented and signed a contract, alongside Mr. Tomlinson, guaranteeing accommodation rooms to visitors for the Summer Festival.
The Hon. Minister of Tourism, Mr. Cardigan Connor extended heartfelt thanks to all who work behind the scenes to keep culture moving forward. He reminded the audience that Carnival is not only about celebration, but also remembrance and appreciation — including those who helped build Anguilla’s reputation from the ground up, particularly highlighting the late Ms. Sue Ricketts.

“When you think about the people who made Anguilla what it is today, especially through tourism – it’s people like her.”

He added a personal note about Meads Bay and its legacy on August Thursday, highlighting how deeply connected places and people are to Anguilla’s Carnival history.

As the island gears up for the festivities, a special invitation was also extended to all to attend the “Carnival at Leon’s” Beach and Brunch event. Set to take place at Leon’s on 3rd August 2025, starting at 11 am, it promises to be a delightful and delicious addition to the Anguilla Summer Festival calendar.

HTP25 is a special tourism awareness programme geared to Grade Six students aged 11-12 to foster greater understanding of the world of Tourism and Hospitality and the importance of the Environment to Tourism, and of the Service Experience to the guest.
Six schools participated, namely, VPS, OKPS, MVPS, VVPS, ATHPS and AARPS. Judging was carried out by a team of three judges from the DoE, in the persons of Mrs. Candis Niles, Tourism Education Coordinator, Mrs. Rita Celestine-Carty, Education Officer Human Resources, and Mrs. Wenonah Lawrence, Education Officer ICT. Two schools were penalized for late submission of their projects. Those schools were VPS and OKPS.

The judges ruled unanimously that Sixth place went to VPS with a score of 223; fifth place went to AARPS with a score of 243; fourth place was awarded to OKPS with a score of 254 out of a possible 300 points;; The third place awardee was ATHPS with a total score of 264; Second place was awarded to MVPS with a score of 274, and the first place honours were awarded to VVPS with a score of 292 out of 300 points.

While all the projects were deemed to be impressive and effective, one project stood out from the others. The winning project had a multi-pronged approach, which focused on beautification and conservation of the environment as a tool for channeling positive Mental Health through the creation of a garden oasis complete with plants, and a functional water fountain; as well as kid-friendly elements like hopscotch, used as a tool for de-escalating feelings of anger and angst, as well as for affirming positive and motivational thoughts. Also incorporated into the Oasis was a mirrored wall of positive Reflection and Affirmation, which included colorfully decorated Signposts highlighting various Virtues supplied by each student, and mounted Slates and colored Chalk for students to write positive messages to share with, and, inspire others. Aesthetically pleasing yet functional and interactive elements were also incorporated into the project’s layout with the addition of an Affirmation Rock Pool made from hand-painted sea rocks; as well as a beautifully decorated and hand-painted wooden Gazebo made from recycled pallet boards, representing a place of Inspiration in the school which beautifully and effectively incorporated Anguilla’s national colours. The use of solar-power for the water fountain; and benches made from pallet boards for students or parents to use, as well as drought resistant plants in the area all reflected principles of conservation, preservation and sustainability of the natural environment, while also addressing the reality of Mental ill Health – a deep-seated issue affecting many of our nation’s smallest and youngest citizens, who will one day become the face of Anguilla’s Tourism Industry.

The judges were impressed by the level of creativity, skill and engagement and enthusiasm displayed by the students, and the level of enjoyment, ownership and knowledge that they displayed as they spoke with the judges about their project and some of the challenges they experienced in working to bring the project to fruition. Students also demonstrated sound knowledge of principles of Hospitality, as they offered demonstrations and the opportunity for the judges to share in their project, as well as demonstrating Anguilla’s legendary Hospitality as they all shared in offering refreshments as a part of the appeal of the Inspirational Space Gazebo.
The VVPS must be especially commended for this wonderful achievement, as this is the fifth time in six years since the inception of the programme that they have earned the First Place Award for their efforts. In speaking to their winning formula, Tourism Education Coordinator, Mrs. Candis Niles, noted that this is a school that consistently chooses to go the extra mile in presenting their project, effectively modelling the principles of Quality which surpasses mere Excellence, by virtue of its undeniable focus on consistently delivering a high standard of work that also incorporates many undeniably kid-friendly, authentic elements.
The group project aims to help students to focus, within the context of Tourism, on the protection and preservation of the natural environment as well as the importance of enhancing and beautifying their surroundings in meaningful and aesthetically-pleasing ways and highlights the importance of group dynamics in achieving common goals. This year also saw the students reacting creatively to the growing trend of Mental Health Awareness to incorporate this important issue into the realm of Sustainability. The students are also given the opportunity to verbally present their thoughts on the project process through their interactions with the judges. The judges were satisfied that there was evidence of these objectives having been met in all submissions. While there were three winners selected from among the six projects presented, the Judges were particularly impressed with the scope of the Project and its reflection of the Principles of Sustainable Farming through the marriage of traditional and innovative methods presented by OKPS; with the Educative yet Aesthetic Value of the Project presented by ATHPS; with the Aesthetic Functionality of the Enhancement Project presented by MVPS; the Sustainable and Aesthetic Value of Repurposing Existing Elements of the Environment as a part of their Project at the VPS; while the Most Impactful Description of Experience was expressed by the students of AARPS in the presentation of their Mindful and Inspiring Project.
The DoE thanks the students for their hard work and enthusiastic response to the Group Projects, which reflected elements of the theme for this year’s Anguilla Day celebrations, “Fulfilling the Dreams of Our Revolutionaries, Making Unity and Patriotism Our Priorities” as Judge Rita Carty spoke to the students about the theme and how they, through their Concepts and Group Dynamics, had actually lifted the values from paper into Reality as evidenced by the overtones of Unity. Patriotism, Sustainability, and Active Concern for the Mental Health and Affirmation of our most Precious and Priceless Resource ~ our People, which were interwoven into each Group Project.

As the Caribbean welcomes travellers for the 2024-2025 tourism season, Anguilla shines as a destination with a unique competitive edge. Renowned for its pristine beaches, secluded luxury, and warm local hospitality, Anguilla offers an escape from the typical crowds found in neighbouring islands like St. Martin/St. Maarten and the Bahamas. This season, the island is set to charm visitors with not just its natural beauty, but an enhanced, accessible experience like never before.

The Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (CJLIA) is undergoing significant upgrades, with a new terminal slated to open in 2025. This expansion will allow Anguilla to welcome more flights and reduce travel hassles—a true game-changer for the island’s tourism industry. While full completion is still on the horizon, direct flights from Miami and San Juan make reaching this gem easier than ever. Direct American Airlines flights and luxurious Tradewind Aviation flights from San Juan bring a touch of ease and exclusivity for visitors looking for a seamless arrival.

But Anguilla’s allure goes beyond logistical ease. For travellers seeking tranquility and authenticity, Anguilla remains an unparalleled choice. With only a few boutique hotels and villas carefully integrated into its landscape, the island offers intimacy over excess, ensuring a truly peaceful retreat. Luxurious resorts like the Aurora, Malliouhana and Cap Juluca provide a personalised experience, while locally-owned establishments highlight the island’s charm and heritage. Unlike the bustling nightlife of larger islands, Anguilla embraces a slower pace, inviting visitors to unwind under the Caribbean sun, explore its world-class cuisine, and connect with the vibrant local culture.

Yet Anguilla’s charm runs far deeper than convenience. Locals play a vital role in creating unforgettable experiences, from renowned chefs and artisans to the average resident who warmly greets visitors on the street or strikes up a friendly chat at a beachside bar. For visitors, these impromptu interactions are the heartbeat of the island’s hospitality, offering a glimpse into everyday Anguillian life. Simple exchanges can leave lasting impressions, whether it’s receiving a heartfelt recommendation for a hidden beach spot, discussing island history, or learning about local customs.

In comparison to nearby islands, Anguilla remains refreshingly unspoiled. Here, there’s no rush, no crowded resorts, and no noise—just uninterrupted tranquillity. This deliberate, community-driven approach to tourism allows Anguilla to preserve its natural beauty, ensuring visitors feel like they’ve discovered a hidden paradise.

For those looking to “lose the crowd and find themselves,” Anguilla is not just another island in the Caribbean; it’s a transformative destination that balances luxury, culture, and connection. This season, it’s not just about where you travel, but how you experience it—and Anguilla is ready to offer the best of both worlds.

Cape Air, a Cape Cod Massachusetts-based airline which had serviced the Anguilla/St. Thomas route from 2021 to 2022 has now resumed airlift to Anguilla from the US Virgin Islands.

On Friday morning, March 8th 2024, the airline re-started air traffic between the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport in Anguilla and the Cyril E. King International Airport in St. Thomas, US. Virgin Islands.

In a brief re-induction ceremony at the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport, the Honourable Minister of Tourism and Transportation, Mr. Haydn Hughes welcomed back Cape Air as an essential means of travel between the two islands.

“We are happy that Cape Air has come back to our shores,” Minister Hughes said. “The relationship between Anguilla and St. Thomas is very deep. Much of the infrastructure in St. Thomas was built by the hands of Anguillians. And so, people have been calling for this flight between Anguilla and St. Thomas for a long time now. Well, you’ve called for this ‘flight’, the ‘flight’ is now here, so I would encourage you to use this ‘flight.”

Cape Air’s Vice President, Peter Farrell, said that on behalf of the company’s CEO, Linda Markham, and all of Cape Air’s employees in the US and the Caribbean, he wished to express how glad he was to be doing business in Anguilla once again. He said that with the airline resuming service between Anguilla and St. Thomas, it was expected that the company will enjoy longevity here, through the future.

Mr. Farrell also echoed the views of Minister Hughes, noting that Anguillians have lots of relatives in the Virgin Islands and they would like to have access to convenient travel services between the islands. In addition, he said that Cape Air is back to play its part in enhancing air access for Anguilla’s tourists as well.

He thanked all the stakeholders who had played a part in bringing the airline back.

“I want to thank persons like, Minister Haydn Hughes; the Airport’s CEO, Kendell Richardson; the Airport’s Manager, Jabari Harrigan; Director of Tourism, Stacy Liburd and the Anguilla Tourist Board officers; as well as Vida Lloyd-Richardson of the Chamber of Commerce and our local Cape Air team. I especially want to thank Rose Hodge,” he said. “She is our ambassador in Anguilla.”

Mrs. Hodge simply said that she welcomed Cape Air back into Anguilla. “I am happy to be a part of the airline’s return,” she said, “and I hope Cape Air is back to stay.”

Mr. Farrell also said that Cape Air had recently celebrated its 35th anniversary as an airline and its 26th anniversary serving the people of the Caribbean. The company operates a fleet of 100 aircraft, and its main model is the Cessna 402, but currently another exciting model, the Technam P2012, is being built for Cape Air in Italy.

As of now until March 30th the flight from Anguilla to St. Thomas will depart at 9:35 a.m. and arrive at 10:30 a.m. From March 31st to June 23rd, the flight from Anguilla will depart and 10:35 a.m. and arrive in St. Thomas at 11:30 a.m. Flights from St, Thomas to Anguilla up until June 23rd will depart St. Thomas 4:40 p.m. and arrive in Anguilla at 5:35 p.m.

Anguilla’s Minister of Infrastructure, Communications, Utilities, Housing and Tourism and the Honorable Haydn Hughes proudly announced a remarkable surge in visitor arrivals to the island for 2023. Emphasizing the island’s steady growth in arrivals and sustained

Hughes highlighted the unprecedented success in his statement: “The total number of stopover arrivals has reached an extraordinary high of 95,944, surpassing the previous record set in 2019.” He further noted the overall visitor arrivals, including day trippers, revealing that Anguilla is rapidly closing the gap and surpassing figures from the pre-pandemic year 2019. The recorded total of 155,732 visitor arrivals in 2023 represents only a 6% decrease compared to 2019.

The Minister commended the private sector and the Anguilla Tourist Board for their role in this achievement and shared, “The government has also dedicated resources to enhance Anguilla’s infrastructure, focusing on providing tangible benefits to the local population and creating an inviting environment for visitors and investors. This commitment is exemplified in the development of the terminal at Blowing Point, which aligns with the goal of delivering a top-notch travel experience for Anguillians and, consequently, positively influencing the overall visitor experience”.

Minister Hughes further stated, “Ongoing improvements at the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport have yielded a product that has garnered favorable feedback from the international carrier American Airlines. These enhancements address their customers’ specific needs and preferences and underscore the government’s unwavering commitment to cultivating a positive and enjoyable travel environment for both Anguillians and visitors”.

“We are expanding our air services to sustain this upward growth trajectory. Intra-regional connectivity has expanded with the introduction of new routes linking Anguilla, Antigua, and St. Barths. Anguilla Air Services now offers scheduled flights between Anguilla and Antigua thrice a week from Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday until April 2024. Tradewind Aviation unveiled a codeshare partnership with British Airways, facilitating interline bookings. Flights connecting Antigua and Anguilla are scheduled to operate on Saturdays and Sundays from mid-January 2024 to early April,” he continued.

Looking ahead, the Minister spoke of the development at Altamer Resort, a 118-berth marina designed to cater to yachts of up to 250 feet in size. Accompanying this is a luxurious 62-room 5-star hotel featuring 58 branded residences, including 20 beachfront villas and 48 resort condominiums. The comprehensive amenities include a state-of-the-art fitness center, a spa, and duty-free shopping. Notably, the resort will have its port of entry equipped with customs and immigration clearance facilities. Phase 1 will concentrate on completing the marina infrastructure by Q4 2025, followed by the Yacht Club Boutique Hotel component scheduled for completion in Q4 2026, he concluded.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on Monday 22nd January, 2024, between the Government of Anguilla and the Savannah Bay/Sile Bay Development LLC for the touristic development of the Savannah Bay Resort on Anguilla’s eastern sea coast.

Officially witnessing the signing on behalf of the Government was Permanent Secretary of Economic Development, Mrs. Chanelle Petty-Barrett, while Attorney Thomas Astaphan witnessed on behalf of the Principals of Savannah Bay/Sile Bay Development LLC, Mr. Philip McCabe, Mr. Joseph McCabe and Mr. Kevin Stoneburner.

“It is my pleasure to welcome you to this milestone occasion,” Mrs. Petty-Barrett said, “where we will be signing an MOU between the Government of Anguilla and the Savannah Bay/Sile Bay Development LLC for the development of a major tourism property on the eastern end of the island.

“We are thrilled to be able to have this official ceremony to mark the beginning of this partnership between the Government of Anguilla and the Savannah Bay/Sile Bay Development LLC.,” she continued. “We know that for many years we had desired to have a major tourism investment in the eastern part of the island, and we are happy to have come to this point.”
The Honourable Premier and Minister of Economic Development, Dr. Ellis Webster, who is the Representative of the east constituency, District 1, said that a tourism resort in the east had been a long time coming. He deemed the Savannah Bay/Sile Bay property to be a perfect location for tourism development.

“When I first met Philip McCabe and Kevin Stoneburner, after they had acquired the 215 acres of land up there,” the Premier said, “I thought that it was a perfect opportunity for them to develop Anguilla’s eastern coastline.”

He said that in order to get an insight into what they do, he met with them in Maples, Florida. “It was great just to see how they had committed to the community in developing projects in Maples, and I knew then that we had found a right mix of persons to develop the eastern end of Anguilla.”

They have the community at heart,” the Premier said. “They develop with an intention to not only be investors but also to be partners and to become a part of the community.”

Principal of the project, Mr. Philip McCabe, lauded the development of the Savannah Bay as a significant opportunity for Anguilla’s tourism product: “We discovered this piece of land about three years ago, and after studying it we came to the conclusion that there is good opportunity for the development of this site. I think the future opportunity of this project is very significant for this location.”

“We are sensitive to the needs of the island,” he said, “and we are understanding the island’s culture. The way we have laid out this plan is one based upon tourism and it is driven by tourism.”

The Savannah Bay Marina and Resort will be built on 215 acres of land at the cost of US$150 Million. The project will feature a luxury hotel, luxury residences, villas, townhouses, condominiums, a marina, a yacht club, port facility, a shopping arcade and commercial vending areas.

As a social contribution to the development of Savannah Bay, a modern state-of-the-art Board Walk is planned by the developers for the Island Harbour area, for some distance east of the Island Harbour pier.
