Roberts and the Rev’d E. Dunstan Richardson.

On Thursday, 12 February 2026, the life of Rev’d Roberts was celebrated at the Ebenezer Methodist Chapel in The Valley. The following morning, Friday, 13 February 2026, the same sanctuary was again filled as family, friends, clergy and members of the wider community gathered to give thanks for the life and witness of Rev’d Richardson. Both services respectively began at 10:00 a.m., with interment following at the Bethel Cemetery in South Hill, in a plot reserved for Methodist ministers, a final resting place among fellow servants of the Church they loved and served faithfully.

The two days of worship were marked by reverence, gratitude and a powerful sense of shared history. The Circuit Choir, directed by Mr. Devaunie Richardson, ministered at both services, offering hymns of hope and assurance that lifted hearts, even in grief. Other talented musicians who featured included Dr. George Roberts, famed composer, and Mr. Edmund Roberts, both nephews of Rev’d Roberts, as well as Mr. Lennox Vanterpool and Ms. Diane Brown-Quarless. Tributes were presented by family members, congregational groups and choirs, each recalling not only the public achievements of the ministers but also the personal kindness, mentorship and pastoral care that shaped countless lives.
Rev’d Franklin A. Roberts’ ministry spanned decades and crossed many shores. He served extensively within the Leeward Islands District, including appointments in Nevis, St. Kitts, Montserrat, Antigua, St. Maarten/St. Martin, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica and Curaçao. His pastoral journey also took him to the Jamaica District from 1966 to 1979, and later to the Guyana District, where he served as District Chairman from 1985 to 1988. Those who spoke of him remembered a steady and visionary leader whose influence reached far beyond any single congregation. The Formal Remembrance for Rev’d Roberts was read by his cousin, Mr. Kenn Banks, and the sermon was delivered by Rev. Everald Galbraith, who reflected on a life poured out in faithful service to God and to the Caribbean Church.

Rev’d E. Dunstan Richardson, ordained in 1967, began his pastoral service in the South Caribbean District from 1971 to 1976 before returning to serve widely within the Leeward Islands District. His appointments included Montserrat, St. Kitts, Aruba, Antigua, St. Thomas, Curaçao, St. Maarten/St. Martin, St. Croix and Anguilla. He also gave ten years of dedicated service as Secretary to the Leeward Islands District Synod and held the offices of District Candidates’ Secretary and General Secretary for Mission and Evangelism. The Formal Remembrance for Rev’d Richardson was read by his godson, Mr Sanford Richardson. Rev. Otto Wade preached at his funeral, lifting up themes of faithfulness and enduring witness that defined Rev’d Richardson’s ministry.

In honour of these two stalwarts, the funerals drew the Superintendent Ministers of all fifteen circuits in the Leeward Islands District. The District Bishop, Rev’d Damien Hughes, was present, and the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA) was represented by former Connexional Bishop Rev’d Otto Wade. Other ministers officiating included District Secretary Rev. Morna Christmas-Frazer, who read the District Obituary for both ministers, and Superintendent Minister Rev Vincia Celestine. Their presence underscored the regional and connexional impact of both men’s service.

Large congregations attended both services, reflecting the breadth of the ministers’ influence. Worshippers came from across the Anguilla Circuit and from other Christian denominations. Visiting relatives and friends travelled from throughout the Caribbean and beyond to stand in solidarity with grieving families and a grateful Church. Government officials and clergy from other churches joined members of the Methodist family, demonstrating the wide respect both ministers commanded in civic and ecclesial life.

For those unable to travel, the services were livestreamed on the Church’s social media platforms, enabling family, friends and members of other circuits across the MCCA to participate in the farewell.

As the final hymns faded and the committal prayers were offered at Bethel Cemetery, the week stood not only as a time of mourning but as a testimony. The lives of Rev’d Franklin A. Roberts and Rev’d E. Dunstan Richardson bore witness to decades of steadfast ministry, regional leadership and unwavering commitment to the Gospel. In celebrating them, the Methodist Church in Anguilla affirmed both its gratitude for their service and its confidence that their legacy will continue to shape generations to come.

He, in fact, died only two weeks after his brother, the late Pastor Norril Gumbs. And like his brother, his funeral was also held at the First Baptist Church in Welches. However, his was on Saturday, July 5th.

His though, was a national funeral, awarded to him in recognition of his acts of bravery throughout the era of the Anguilla Revolution.

At the Church, a couple tributes were rendered, hymns were sung, and the Scripture read. The sermon was delivered by Pastor Gareth Hodge, in which he depicted the importance of rendering faithful service to God and to country irrespective of who is in charge as Head in authority or leadership.

Frank was a humble, modest man who faithfully served God and country. Like his brother, he was a sturdy man of faith and courage, and he was careful to exhibit his Christian service first in the Baptist Church, and in his later years, among the Wesleyan Holiness congregation in Stoney Ground.

His spiritual shepherd there, Pastor Juliet Simon, referred to him as an ever punctual member, present at every service, and a trusted custodian of God’s House.

But Frank was not only faithful to God and to His church. He, in his own way, also loyal to his government and his country. He courageously contributed acts of bravery during the 1967 Anguilla Revolution, and as such he was duly accorded a national funeral by the Government of Anguilla.

In recognition of his fearless courage and love for Anguilla, a statement from the Office of the Premier read in part: “One of Frank’s most notable contributions during the Anguilla Revolution was his brave use of heavy equipment to block off the [dirt strip] runway at the old Wallblake Airport. This blockage effectively prevented planes landing with police and reinforcements from St. Kitts. This act symbolized the determination of Frank and other Anguillians to assert their autonomy.”

In addition, Frank was one of the fearless foot soldiers who kept guard on the vulnerable beaches during the nights of the revolutionary period.
The late Frank K. Gumbs was awarded the Anguilla Badge of Honour and Queen’s Certificate in 2019 for his remarkable service to Anguilla.

As a mark of respect for this fallen patriot, all national flags were flown at half-mast on Friday July 4th and on the day of the funeral until the service was ended. A police guard of honour and the Police Community Band were present at the funeral service, and a contingent of police officers bore the body in and out of the church and at the Sandy Hill cemetery.

The casket was draped with the Anguilla national flag, which was folded in military fashion and presented to Frank’s daughter, Staria, prior to his burial. A gun salute by members of the Royal Anguilla Police Force was also observed in Frank’s honour at the Sandy Hill cemetery.

The first Government press conference conducted by the recently elected Anguilla United Front (AUF) administration took place at the Ministry of Finance Conference Room on Monday, March 31st, 2025.

Of interest was Premier Cora Richardson-Hodge’s explanation regarding the recent ruling from the Privy Council on a judicial review for Anguilla’ s former local banks, NBA and CCB.

However, before she addressed the judicial review by the Privy Council, the Premier sought to allay any fears that the current local banking industry would be affected. She advised that there is no need to worry because the ruling will have no impact on the operations of the National Commercial Bank of Anguilla (NCBA).

“I want to reassure the public that our National Commercial Bank of Anguilla is not a party to these proceedings,” the Premier said. “Our bank remains strong. It was once in a bridge bank status, but it is now a very strong bank, and we encourage our people to support it.”

She particularly mentioned that she would want to urge a sense of calm across the island, noting that the bank is not at any risk.

In essence, a statement issued by the Privy Council on Monday March 24th had given the two former indigenous banks, National Bank of Anguilla (NBA) and Caribbean Commercial Bank (CCB), the right to pursue a “judicial review” against the Government of Anguilla and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. This decision overturns a previous High Court and Court of Appeal ruling which had denied the off-shore sections of the banks permission to challenge their exclusion from a 2016 financial rescue package.

The Premier noted that in relation to the Privy Council’s decision, in particular, the application that the Privy Council would have heard is the first step in an application for judicial review. A judicial review is a process where an aggrieved person (or entity) who has a grievance over a decision made by a statutory body, or by a government, or a government affiliated entity, can apply to the court for a review of that decision.
“In order to move forward with a judicial review,” she pointed out, “there is an application that must first be heard. That application was heard at the High Court level and then appealed to the Court of Appeal, and then it was appealed to the Privy Council (where it now stands).

“At the Privy Council level, the Court has decided to grant the application for judicial review. The next step is for the judicial review application itself to go forward before the Court,” she said.

The Premier further explained that the decision was not an ultimate decision, and because this is a matter that is still before the Court, she is limited in terms of the kinds of information that can be given at this time.

Anguilla was once again made to pay its last respects to another one of its citizens who had made a patriotic contribution to the success of the famous 1967 Anguilla Revolution. On Saturday, 21st May, family, friends and acquaintances, gathered at the Pro Cathedral of St. Mary to take part in the Home going Service in Celebration of the Life of Mr. Cardigan Algernon Swithin Hodge, affectionately know as “Cardie”.
Born on 6th May 1940, the late freedom fighter died after a brief illness last Easter Sunday morning – on 17th April, 2022, at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

His funeral came on the heels of that of another Revolution personality, Mr. Hugo Rey, whose Service of Thanksgiving was held on Friday 22nd April. Together, Rey and Hodge would have played pivotal roles in planning and executing the revolutionary activities that led Anguilla to successfully revolt against the repressive St. Kitts regime – a 1967 Caribbean feat that spelt political victory for Anguilla, this small, bold, yet humble island nation. As such, both men were accorded the rights of a national funeral. Today, we remember their dedication to our fight for freedom – along with others who have gone before –
especially in this month of May when we observe our national holiday and commemorate their patriotic mission for such a worthy cause.

At Cardie’s funeral last Saturday morning, a contingent of six policemen from the Royal Anguilla Police Force (RAPF) bore the flag- draped casket with his remains into the church. Following just a few tributes, the RAPF Community Band played the National Anthem and National Song. Cardigan’s eulogy was then read by his grand-daughter, Keema Boland-Bryan. In it there were many wonderful notions attributed to his credit. Writen by his brother, Tyrone Hodge, and other family members, his eulogy depicted him as one who was “beloved by so many. This was evident by how he treated others.”

The reading continued: “He was indeed a walking version of the golden rule. And since he once worked for Her Majesty’s Customs, on any given day, it was not uncommon to see him delivering freight to those who did not know that a package had come for them.”

The eulogy went on: “He was a wonderful person to all who knew him. He contributed to the betterment of his fellowman and will be remembered as someone who genuinely cared, and who impacted the lives of many. Cardigan was a loving husband to Claris Hodge, a caring stepfather to Margarita Boland, and a grandfather to Kayme Lake and Keema Bryan. He was an exceptional brother, an exemplary cousin, and a loyal friend.”

The Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Cora Richardson-Hodge, was absent for the service, but she was represented by Opposition member, the Honourable Cardigan Connor. On her behalf, he read in part: “Mr. Hodge was awarded the Anguilla Badge of Honour and Queen’s Cerificate in 2003, which he received with pride. With respect to the days of the Anguilla Revolution, it is well known that he, his father Walter Hodge, and a number of other sung and unsung revolutionary heroes were key to the establishment of Anguilla’s first administration during that tubulent period.

“Mr. Hodge, a son of the soil, contributed towards the advancement of Anguilla. Anguilla mourns the passing of this humble, revolutionary who has touched the lives of so many persons in so many ways. I share with his family, his many friends and, indeed, all Anguillians, in mourning his loss.”

The Honourable Premier, Dr. Ellis Webster, also spoke in glowing tones of Cardie’s character, and the part he played towards the advancement of Anguilla: “Cardie was a devoted husband, brother, father, uncle and friend. His life was one of humility and service. He was a caring and soft-spoken man who was sensitive to the needs of others, and wanted to help, in any way that he could, to make life better for the misfortunate whom he came into contact with.

“As a committed Customs Officer, he made sure that those who benefitted from his services knew that he served them honestly. He even went above and beyond, to deliver packages to his people in need, though he did not have to do so.

“Cardie was a revolutionary hero. In fact, If you would have visited his home, you would have taken note of a picture on his wall of him posing with his ready rifle. He was one of many who guarded the vulnerable beaches and coastlines of Anguilla during the days of the Revolution against any attack from St. Kitts.”

Cardie was also an avid singer and choir enthusiast. Speaking about his singing abilities, and his commitment to seeing Anguilla rise out of the dreary ashes of oppression, the Honourable Premier said of him, again, in an official written statement:

“Cardigan’s life was one of humilty and service to God, and he used his melodic voice as part of the music ministry in the Anglican Church. His abiding faith, and his concerns about the wellbeing of others, led him to become involved in the Anguilla Revolution. Like his deceased father, the late Walter Hodge, Cardigan believed in a vision for a better Anguilla – where the shackles of poverty and oppression would be replaced by prosperity and a bright future for generations to come.”

Presentation of Flag to
Mrs. Margarita Boland

The sermon preached by Canon Reid Simon portrayed Cardie as a man who always found time for the things of God and his church, but also as one who fought for the welfare and freedom of his native Anguilla. “As I thought about Cardigan Hodge,” the preacher reflected, “I thought about a man who fought to have Anguilla to be where it is tòday. He made sure that through the days of the Revolution a people’s way of life was improved and a destiny was maintained…Cardigan was devoted in terms of his love for his country. He was committed to ensuring that the Anguilla way of life was preserved.”

“Besides,” Canon Simon noted, “Cardigan fought — not literally — but he stood firm for his faith. He believed in God. He endeavoured to walk with God. When I listened to persons telling stories about Cardigan’s life, I was amazed that several of them would say that for a number of years, in Island Harbour, Cardigan and his wife were the two people who kept the choir at St. Andrew going. He was faithful in making sure that his connection with his God bore witness to those around him.”

Seeing that Cardie was so influential in the work of the choir, it was only befitting that the Anguilla National Choir, which typically performs at national funerals, provided the service with melodious singing of tunes like “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”; “Have a Little Talk With Jesus”; and the “23rd Psalm”. All were admirably rendered under the direction of Ms. Lois Hazell.

Interment of the late Cardigan Algernon Swithin Hodge took place at the Sandy Hill Cemetery. There, the Anguilla flag was removed from the casket, ceremoniously folded in military fashion, and cordially presented to Cardigan’ stepdaughter, Mrs. Margarita Boland. Sergeant Ronnie Fleming, of the RAPF, did the honours of making this presentation on behalf of the Government and people of Anguilla. Then, near the outskirts of the gravesite, a band of five rifle-bearing police officers fired a three-round gun salute. The remains of Cardie were then gently laid to rest. May his soul rest in peaceful repose.

With profound sadness, her family honors the passing of Meribeth Ellen Hemberger, 13 February 1962 – 9 March 2022. With grace, Meribeth passed peacefully in her sleep in the quiet comfort of her own home. Meribeth was the beloved youngest daughter of Robert Charles and Margie Jean Hemberger. For just over 60 years, Meribeth was cherished little sister to James, Fritz and Jacqueline. Meribeth not only imbued her role as daughter and sister but godmother, auntie and great auntie, niece and cousin and most of all … friend.

Know that Meribeth’s family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and friendship – far, far, too many to mention here but it is our sincere hope to personally thank each and every one. The family plans “a celebration of Meribeth’s life” at the place of Margie Jean’s birth in Minnesota – and Anguilla’s Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s witnesses has graciously offered to conduct a service in memory of Meribeth via zoom. Our invitation to join us will be announced at a later date.

Mr. Hugo Rey – a visionary entrepreneur – passed away at his residence on February 25, 2022. In a show of respect for his legacy, flags are currently flown at half-mast at his business place, and will remain that way until his interment.
He was the son of the late Wallace Rey who was one of the leaders of the Anguilla Revolution. He was also a husband, father, friend, and native son.
Like his father, Mr Hugo Rey displayed a balanced maturity as a young man, showing courage when he joined others in the cause for freedom during the Anguilla Revolution.

He later went on to serve as chief engineer responsible for construction, and construction engineering at the Public Works Department (now the Department of Infrastructure), ensuring that construction in Anguilla was done at an acceptable and measurable standard.
As a visionary, Mr Rey stepped away from the traditional jobs available in Anguilla, at the time, and recognised the need for services in a developing and progressing society that afforded him the opportunity to carve niche markets in Anguilla. His creative, forward-thinking, and commercial acuity, positioned him to try something out of the ordinary.

After leaving Public Works, he started Rey’s Funeral Home – the first provider of mortuary and crematory services on Anguilla. Over the years, these service offerings have evolved from the traditional funeral arrangements and forms of burial, to more personalised options.
He also started the first private waste collection service on the island, securing the first contract with the government for island-wide collection and disposal of household garbage.

Mr Hugo Rey will long be remembered as an entrepreneur and as a man who was passionate about seeing Anguilla progress. Whenever you had an encounter with him, he would often have many anecdotes to share about the Anguilla Revolution – some of them quite hilarious, and others deadly serious.

The Anguillian newspaper joins with many others in extending condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr Hugo Rey.

Another renowned icon of Methodist ministry, who paid special tribute to this fallen soldier, was Bishop Theophilus Rolle, a longstanding pastor who had served in the Anguilla circuit for some period. The Formal Remembrance was presented by Brother Kenn Banks, and playing the organ were Lennox Vanterpool and Devaunie Richardson.

The choir sang immaculately. “Abide with Me”, conducted by Bro. Devaunie and backed up by Bro. Lennox, was sung in unique style with pristine vocal arrangement.

In presenting his tribute, Bishop Rolle spoke convincingly of Rev. Lloyd’s service and impeccable character. He said he was honoured to pay tribute to the Reverend, referring to him as a colleague, mentor and Father in the Faith. “The Reverend Joseph Lloyd leaves behind a legacy,” he said, “that will be forever etched in the annals of the history of his beloved island, Anguilla, and in the Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas.
“Much can be said about his influence, the impact and the indelibility of his life and work prior to his pursuit of ministerial formation — and the fifty-plus years of ministry which followed. He will be remembered as an engaging teacher.

“Many will remember his effervescent laughter which, in addition to being contagious, brought a sense of calm and peace. Some will remember his diligent work shaping the lives of young men in the Boys Brigade. Still others will remember his persuasiveness with which he shared the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Bishop Rolle went on to point out the qualities of a man who was fearless in his judgment: “To me, he will forever be remembered as the quintessential pastor; a good listener; one who was caring and compassionate in heart; and a discerning spirit. He possessed the genuineness to value all people; a wise counselor; a skilled mediator; and fearless in his judgment.”

Another stirring tribute was given by Local Preacher, Stanford Richardson, who made mention of a list of the many types of community services given by Reverend Lloyd: “All of us as local preachers,” he reflected, “have stories of Reverend Joseph Lloyd’s impact on our own lives.

“For some, he was a teacher in Primary School or Sunday School. For others, he was a Boys Brigade Leader. In ministry, for some, he was a tutor as they prepared themselves for Preacher’s Exams. He was one whom you could talk with, and look up to, as we grapple with the issues of the day. But to all of us, he was that caring, compassionate pastor and trusted friend, in whose presence we always felt loved.”
Bishop Charles A. Seaton, who delivered Words of Comfort remarked that Reverend Lloyd sought to live by what he preached — the standard of the Word: “As we gather to celebrate the life of our departed brother, family member, colleague and friend, to say that we are of mixed emotions is indeed a gross understatement. Certainly, we are unanimous in agreeing that the Reverend Joseph Lloyd was a man of integrity who not only preached the Word, but sought to live by it as well,” he said.

In reading the Formal Remembrance, Bro Kenn Banks noted that Reverend Lloyd was a caring individual who assumed every role possible in the life of the church, and he impacted the lives of many Anguillian men.

He stated: “Reverend Lloyd grew up here at Ebenezer where he assumed every role possible in the life of the congregation—
Sunday School Superintendent; Boys’ Brigade Captain; Class Leader of Junior Guild and Wesley Guild; Choir Member; and a member of the Men’s Fraternal. He was also a teacher at The Valley Boys School where he was known as Teacher Noddy to his face, but ‘Noddy Shanker’ behind his back.

“He was a loving and caring disciplinarian. His life in Anguilla, prior to going off to seminary, was impactful both in church and in The Valley Boys School. To quote his colleague and friend, Rev. E. Dunstan Richardson, ‘the impact that Teacher Noddy/Rev. Lloyd had on the lives of the 2nd Anguilla Boys Brigade, those whom he taught at The Valley Boys School, those who heard his preaching, and those whom he helped during Summer vacation in their school work, is beyond human thinking.’

“The list of boys he impacted reads like a ‘Who is Who’ of Anguilla’s men, all of whom acknowledged the role he played in molding their young lives. The names of these men include: the late Professor Arthur Richardson; the late Professor James Richard Payne; the late Leroy Rogers; the late Captain Clayton J. Lloyd; Ralph Hodge, MBE; Dr. Lindel Brooks; Bishop Errol Brooks; the Honourable Victor Banks; Christian Richardson; Albertis Richardson; Bernard Richardson; Nat Hodge of The Anguillian, and the list goes on.”

Among the many scripture readings, one was by Bro. Neville Lloyd, the son of Reverend Lloyd. It was 2 Timothy 4:1-8 in which the Apostle Paul gave his testimony as he was coming close to the end of his life. A portion of that scripture states: “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

Delivering the sermon was Bishop Everald Galbraith of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA). As a Guyanese Method Minister, he had been a close associate of Reverend Lloyd when he served in Guyana. He began by extending his condolences to Reverend Lloyd’s wife, Joan, and the rest of the family. Then he said: “Today the MCCA salutes this exemplary pastor and leader — a valiant but humble soldier of the cross who has been promoted to glory.”

“Reverend Lloyd and I shared a special bond,” he pointed out. “This could be credited to the fact that both of us — at different times, of course — started our ministry in the West Demerara Circuit of Guyana. In my association with him, I found him to be a very approachable, pleasant, loving, caring, and respectful person, irrespective of one’s age or status.”
The text of his sermon was the same scripture that was read by Reverend Lloyd’s son, Neville — 2 Timothy 4:8. His message was entitled “Facing Death with Confident Expectation”. He alluded to Paul’s declaration, which claimed with certainty and conviction, ‘ Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.’”

“By confident expectation,” he said, “I mean having a strong sanguine hope or belief that good things are going to happen in the future.” He reiterated this statement as he sought to get the congregation to think heavenward. “As children of God we can wait, with an eager expectation, knowing that something good is coming our way, both in this life and especially in eternity with God.”

He explained that when Paul wrote those words of scripture to Timothy, his spiritual son, he was in prison awaiting his imminent execution. “In his reflective moments, Paul contemplated his earthly pilgrimage and ministry, and he confidently affirmed his faithfulness to his call. In his letter to his young mentee, Pastor Timothy, he assured him that he was satisfied that he did all God asked him to do. He described his life as an offering pour out on the altar to God…”

Then with an air of confident repose, Bishop Galbraith observed: “Today, we lay to rest Reverend Joseph Lloyd, an elder and statesman of the Kingdom of God. He fought the good fight; he finished his race; he kept the faith. Our brother departed this life with confident expectation. We commend him into the hands of Almighty God.”

The remains of Anguilla’s noteworthy teacher, mentor, pastor and friend, and stalwart of the faith, the Reverend Joseph Renurd Lloyd, was humbly, quietly laid to rest on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the Bethel Methodist Cemetery in South Hill.

The Anguillian tenders its most profound condolences to Reverend Lloyd’s bereaved family, relatives and associates. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

The Valley, Anguilla – On 9 December 2021, the Rotary Club of Anguilla held a memorial service in celebration of the life of one of its long service members, Rotarian Madeline Kelly-Pierz, who passed away on November 23, 2021, after a brief illness at her home in West End. The service was arranged by the Rotary Club of Anguilla and was held at Roy’s Bayside Grill – home of the Rotary Club of Anguilla weekly meetings.

Reverend Father Menes Hodge, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Anguilla and a long active honorary Rotarian, conducted the service of thanksgiving. In addition to the members of the Club, a number of honorary members and close friends of Rotarian Madeline were in attendance. Also in attendance was the Honourable Cardigan Connor, District Representative for West End. Rotarian Madeline’s family and friends from the USA also joined the service via zoom.

At the end of the service, a number of persons gave glowing tributes – most of whom described her as the most loving and caring person, who had a passion for Rotary and its motto “Service above Self”.
Rotarian Madeline was originally from the USA, but took up residence in Anguilla – for many years – a place she called home. During her time in Anguilla, she joined the Rotary Club of Anguilla and has since then been a very active member. She has made significant contributions to the lives of many Anguillians, especially the youth, where she willingly volunteered her time by tutoring young adults under the Department of Social Development programme.

Rotarian Madeline graciously opened her doors to hosting several activities for the Interact Club of Anguilla, in particular their fun day activities. She also provided accommodation to one of our Past Assistant District Governors, Jasmine Sally, from neighbouring St Martin when she visited the Club. These acts of kindness reflected the true spirit of Rotary which is embedded in the motto “Service Above Self”.

The Rotary Club of Anguilla would like to extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends especially in the USA. She will be missed by her Rotary family and friends in Anguilla and abroad.

The funeral service of the late Melvin C. Richardson, of North Hill, born on May 20th 1966, took place at the Church of God (Holiness) on Thursday, December 16th. A capacity crowd filled the church as family, relatives, neighbours, friends and colleagues gathered to pay their last respects to the 55-year old gentle, jovial and friendly soul.

Melvin passed away on November 10th 2021, after a brief illness, and his unexpected sudden passing shocked and saddened many of those who had known him for his kind endearing personality.
In his formal remembrance, Mrs. Marva Thompson described him as one who had learnt from his devout parents how to love and worship God through daily devotions and living in line with the principles of God’s Word. She said: “Melvin played the guitar which he cherished, and which made him come alive while playing songs and hymns of the Christian faith. He often said, ‘yuh could touch mi dis and mi dat, but don’t touch mi guitar.’”
Mrs. Thompson continued, “As he grew up into a fine young man, he became the gadget-geek of the family, and he was the one to bring the family together for gatherings. He was a spiritual man, and a man with insight into the things of God.”

Melvin was married to his wife, Sharon, for twenty-six years. She was described as “the love of his life”. Their marriage produced four children. He was a faithful family man. According to Mrs. Thompson, “On many moonlit nights Melvin would be found with his wife out for a stroll, and engaging in thoughtful conversation about plans for the future.”
She continued: “It was a very sad day when Melvin Conroy Richardson departed this world. He was a faithful husband, a father, brother, friend, dreamer, visionary, spiritual leader, deep thinker, motivator, coach and encourager. He has left a void in the lives of many.”

The sermon was delivered by Methodist Minister, Rev. Vincia Celestine. She comforted the family by insisting that God is in control of sudden tragedies, the likes of which characterise Melvin’s passing. She reminded them that though they might be filled with grief and questions concerning why he had to leave so young, and so suddenly, still it is comforting to know that Jesus cares about their sorrows.

Rev. Celestine joined with Melvin’s Brother, Rev. Lindsey Richardson and Rev. Wilmoth Hodge to sing that comforting hymn of the faith ‘Does Jesus care’ At the end of the Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Melvin C. Richardson, his brother, Lindsey, expressed his thanks to all who had attended the service to pay their final respects and all those who and shared words of consolation with the family upon His passing.
The Anguillian joins in extending condolences to Melvin’s family and relatives and all who are left to mourn his sudden loss. May his soul rest in perpetual peace.

As a mark of respect, for his service and commitment, the Government of Anguilla, through its Protocol Office, observed his passing with a National Funeral. This included the flying of the Official Flag at half-mast before and following the funeral; a Police Guard of Honour which bore his casket to the Pro-Cathedral of St. Mary, West End and to the Immanuel Methodist Church Cemetery.
The National Funeral was held for Mr. Richardson on Friday, October 29. He was born on May 4, 1930 and passed away on September 21, 2021.

Anguilla’s Premier, Dr. Lorenzo Webster, a personal friend of Mr. Richardson, issued an Official Statement on his passing.

“Mr. Richardson was an Anguillian patriot whose humility and love for his fellowman propelled him to become a foot soldier in the 1967 Anguilla Revolution,” the Premier stated. “He was a committed freedom fighter who believed in the revolutionary call for building a new Anguilla. He rallied alongside revolutionary leaders as they led various demonstrations to bring attention to the plight of the Anguillian people – and to demand change.

“His love for Anguilla fuelled his dedication to ensure the island’s coastlines were safe and protected. He therefore willingly served as a watchman who guarded the beaches mainly on the western side of the island to thwart any attempt of invasion by St. Kitts. In 1995, this Anguillian revolutionary was awarded the Anguilla Badge of Honour and Queen’s Certificate for the role he played in the Anguilla Revolution.”

The Premier’s statement continued: “In addition to the Revolution, Mr. Richardson was an active and well-loved member of his community. He was a sailor, fisherman and boat racing captain and positively influenced the lives of those around him. His readiness to always be of service to his people was again demonstrated when he vied for political office in 1981. While he was unsuccessful, his commitment to the cause of the less fortunate will forever be remembered.”
The leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Cora Richardson-Hodge, who was off-island, was represented at the National Funeral by her colleague, Mr. Cardigan Connor, the Opposition Elected Member for District 7, West End and Long Bay.

In her statement in the funeral brochure, she said in part: “Mr. Richardson was self-made, industrious and innovative. His belief system was formed by not only his experiences from childhood, but also from his exploits while travelling both abroad and at home. His various sojourns took him to the United States as a seasonal worker, becoming the owner and operator of a cargo vessel, a boat captain, a fisherman plying his trade and, of course, his venture into politics. One can only imagine the number of lives Mr. Richardson would have touched as he engaged in every one of these activities over the many years.”

The Opposition Leader added: “Mr. Richardson heeded the clarion call to not only play a significant role during the Anguilla Revolution, but also to later make his contribution to Anguilla’s political landscape. As a result of his beneficence, Mr. Richardson received the Badge of Honour and the Queen’s Certificate in 1995 for his particular involvement in the 1967 Anguilla Revolution.

“I wish to extend profound sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones on the loss of the late Mr. Evans McKenely Richardson.”

He referred to Jesus’ repeated entreaties to Peter: “Do you love me? Feed my lambs.” In an emotional plea, Rev. Richardson spoke about the need for parents to love their children and to give them good directions in life; and he mentioned the late Mrs. Carty’s admonition to his wife, (Mrs. Charmaine Rey-Richardson), to take care of the young people (in school and church).
In comforting the bereaved family, Rev. Richardson took the opportunity to thank a number of “prayer warriors” for lifting up his ailing brother, Melvin in their prayers, attracting much support from his listeners.

The virtues of patriotism, respect and thankfulness, which may have been slipping in the Anguillian community, especially among the youth, were given a huge and welcome boost on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

That was when hundreds of schoolchildren, in the various uniforms of their schools, and waving national flags, paid tribute to Anguilla’s former Chief Minister, the late Hubert Benjamin Hughes.
The event was an official island-wide motorcade, part of the formal activities, to mark the passing of the Anguillian leader, with five decades of political involvement and service in the history of the island.
Mr. Hughes passed away on May 7, 2021, at the age of 87. He held the appointment of Chief Minister in Anguilla for a record three times. He retired from active politics in 2015 when he did not contest the general elections in April that year, but remained a revered icon in the past politics and leadership of the island.

Though too young, to know in detail the intricate and colourful political history of Anguilla, the schoolchildren are nevertheless conversant with those in the vanguard of national leadership. They have benefitted much from the classroom instruction of their teachers who led them on the streets to salute the former Chief Minister, as the hearse from the Two Sons Funeral Home, slowly drove by. Ministers of Government, and members of the public, were also in the motorcade which lasted for several hours.

The children and their teachers must be highly commended for their large, enthusiastic and patriotic turnout; for enduring the mid-morning to after 12 noon searing heat of the sun; and their patience waiting for the motorcade.
Here and there, along the route, small groups of adults and individuals, some emerging from their workplaces, or homes, were also on the roadsides to bid farewell to the former Chief Minister. The motorcade either drove through, or stopped briefly, in some areas of the western villages where Mr. Hughes held political meetings and rallied his supporters at election time over the years.

It was a well-planned and executed motorcade. The organiser and leader was Sergeant Delvin Fleming, CPM, of the Traffic Department of the Royal Anguilla Police Force, with the assistance of his team of officers. A group of community motor cyclists added much support and respect to the motorcade.

Scenes of the event are published on the following pages of The Anguillian newspaper for the national record.

No books have been written about his life and work. But the Anguilla House of Assembly will be a good information resource for any researcher or historian wishing to write about the late former Chief Minister, Mr. Hubert Benjamin Hughes.

It was a most formal and respectful sitting of the Parliament on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, for present and past members of the House. They all came together to pay tribute in person and, to some extent, in writing, to the late colourful and shrewd politician, with upwards of five decades of political involvement in Anguilla.
Their tributes, in which they spoke or wrote about the man they knew so well, capturing in much detail his varying personal and public leadership styles, now form part of the official archives of the House.
Not far down on the list of tributes, the three-times former Chief Minister’s son, Mr. Haydn Hughes, Member for Road South and Minister of Infrastructure and Tourism, gave his own assessment of his father and mentor. He declared: “If Ronald Webster was the Father of the Nation, then Hubert Benjamin Hughes was the Godfather”. He was obviously speaking about his dad’s long and protective leadership role in Anguilla and love for its people. As an aside, asserting his own influence and love for speaking, he humorously promised to beat the three-day record his father spoke for in the House of Assembly.

The funeral service was held at the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium because the nearby Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, where Mr. Hodge was a Brother, has been closed since the onset of COVID-19.

On Friday evening, April 2, the day preceding the celebration at the school auditorium, the Jehovah Witnesses held a special Zoom funeral service for him. It was largely conducted by Brother Crispin Gumbs who also delivered the message during the interment at the Sandy Ground Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, April 3.
