Over the weekend of June 7th to 9th, The CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa hosted the 2nd Annual Anguilla Open Golf Tournament. The event was a huge success as 90 golfers from 11 different countries participated in the three day competition.
The mission of The Anguilla Open is to raise funds for Junior Golf in Anguilla. Through sponsorships here and abroad, the event was able to raise thousands of dollars for the program. Ryan Bowey, the resident PGA Golf Professional at CuisinArt, explained that golf teaches children many valuable life skills such as respect, integrity, judgment, courtesy and perseverance. The Junior Golf Program at CuisinArt is run by Ryan, and he states it is his mission to introduce many youngsters here in Anguilla to the great game of golf.
In addition to organizing the entire Anguilla Open, Ryan was also able to claim victory in the event! Ryan had a total score of 156, just one shot better than the 2nd place finisher, Raymond Percival of St. Kitts. Ryan went on to say that even though the victory was a great accomplishment, he was more proud of the event itself and all of the funds that were raised for the Junior Golf Program. He was also happy to bring so much revenue to the island in the off-season, as nearly 100 room nights at CuisinArt were booked for the event.
Some other local golfers that played well included Rodney Tackling who came in 2nd Gross in the Men’s Flight, Larry Stott won 2nd Net in the Men’s Flight, Val Banks won 3rd Net in the Senior Flight and Nathalie Le Senechal was the Net Winner of the Ladies Flight! Also winning a special prize was Glen Gumbs, who won free cable and internet for a year from CCC for winning a closest to the pin contest.
Ryan stated the event would not be possible without the support of the sponsors. GE was the Title Sponsor of the event for the 2nd year in a row. Other major sponsors included TSG Technologies, Inovateus Solar, The Anguilla Tourist Board, Universal Construction, Tropical Distributors and Zemi Beach. Ryan also said there were numerous other local sponsors that supported the event and he wanted to thank all of them for helping make the tournament a great success.
Ryan stated participants came from Anguilla, Curacao, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, St. Croix, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Martin/St. Maarten, St. Thomas and The United States, and almost all of them said they can’t wait to tell their friends and come back next year because they had such a great experience in Anguilla!
