Though the skeptics doubted
From a mother who winced with joy
Anticipating me and you
One by one, together.
Together we squeezed a lemon cry
For a father who wiped
A lemonade drop from his eye
Welcoming me and you,
One by one, together.
Together we blossomed and bloomed
Fears vanished, hopes loomed
Like the dutiful sun, moon or star light
That shines by day or by night
Like a trembling, trembling breeze
That bounces through the trees
Together we learnt and erred
By actions and by word
Your error teaching me
My mistake learning you
Until like a harvest
We reached our filled barns
And dined at our tables together.
Together like uniformed soldiers
We bore our wounded on our shoulders.
We battled and triumphed
After bleeding one by one, one by one.
Wounds bandaged, bones mended
Cause of strife not fully comprehended
But like a bowl of hot porridge
Where each granule swells and unites in the boiling
We savoured each spoonful
One by one, together.
Together eyes dimmed, limbs tired
Razor brain now loosely wired
Hands fumbling
Tongues mumbling,
Health decreasing
Years increasing
But like the rain
Of a dubious hurricane
Fierce torrential we thrive.
Deeds of heroes might have forgotten been
But the incognito soldier in his her chest
Recorded the good, the better, the best
And carefully gathered them
Treasures, diadems
Not to perish
But to cherish
One by one, together.
Together we harvest, we store, we grind
While mixed memories come to mind
We revel, we celebrate in varied manner
We hoist and then proudly salute our banner
One by one, together.
We be proud! Yes, we be!
We be gloat in glory! Yes, we do!
In exuberance and majesty! We do, yes.
So here we are! Today!
We are here! Hooray!
One by one,
One………by………one
Together!
