The Education Department in Anguilla has acknowledged the receipt of a quantity of books, packed in twelve boxes, from Grover Cleveland Middle School in Caldwell, New Jersey. That school is named after the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.
The books, ranging from children’s books to text books, have been distributed to the six public primary schools and a number of private schools in Anguilla. The distribution began on Friday, May 10, at The Valley Primary School.
The recently-received books were sent to Anguilla through the efforts of two Grover Cleveland Middle School students, Emma Scott and Kaitlyn Kinsella, following a summer visit to the island last year. On their return to school, the two students approached the Principal, James Brown, with the idea of providing the books to the Anguillian students, and he quickly gave his approval.
The two girls recruited a number of friends to assist them with their project dubbed “A Book Can Make a Difference'” and were able to collect many books to ship to Anguilla.
Ms. Veda Harrigan, Anguilla’s Education Officer for Pre-Primary Education, expressed thanks to the two US students and all other persons who assisted them with their book-drive. “On behalf of the children of Anguilla, I would like to express my gratitude to Emma Scott and Kaitlyn Kinsella who initiated the book-drive called ‘A Book can make a Difference’, she stated in acknowledging the books. “Our appreciation to all who assisted them in the collection, packaging and shipping of the books; and to the Principal and Staff of Grover Middle School for allowing the students to embark on this drive.
“The books will make a difference as resource materials for use in classroom libraries.”
