Members of the public have been given an opportunity to view and sample a beverage presentation by students pursuing the Hospitality Associates Degree Programme at the Anguilla Community College.
The participating students were Drew Williams and Darrell Moses whose presentation, called “Around the world in the Mug” featured five beers from five countries; Trickston Laney and Leon Morancie who both exhibited five types of wine: sweet or dessert wine; sparkling wine; white and red wine; Dawn Hodge-Connor whose exhibition was on fresh fruit smoothie drinks; and Sherneka Richardson and Stacey Penn who presented mixology exhibits.

Lecturer for the Bar Operations Class this semester, Karimah Carty, said the second year students were required to make a beverage presentation which included beer from various countries, wine, mixology and non-alcoholic drinks.

“They were paired in groups of two and each group was required to display a different presentation demonstrating their knowledge of the beverage,” Mrs. Carty stated. “It is part of their Associates Degree Programme, which has a duration period of two to two-and-a-half years. These are actually our first year students and most of them should be finishing at the end of this year or the end of the first semester next year.”

She further explained that the course work undertaken by the eight students represented ten percent of their final grade. She added that the course was due to continue next year and that persons were being encouraged to enrol in the programme. “It is a course that doesn’t have any prerequisites and so, if they want, they can come in and take a one-off course in beverages. They can contact the college for information on the Bar Operations Course,” Mrs. Carty said.

Meanwhile, Director of Hospitality Studies, Sharon Richardson, commented on the course as follows: “The Bar Operations class exceeded expectations with the remarkable presentations by the students. It is true that it is the first time that we have offered this course; and the students were exposed to experts in the field as well as tapping into their creative minds by developing their own signature drinks.

“Each group was able to enlighten visitors about the various beverages they displayed. It was a great learning experience and fun at the same time. Mrs. Carty did an exceptional job in facilitating this course and we hope to see more students enrolled in the programme.”
