Anglicans and Methodists, principally from St. Mary’s and Ebenezer, spent the Easter Monday holiday with members of all ages enjoying the traditional egg-hunting, cricket and cakewalk dance on the grounds of the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium.
For the second consecutive year, the Anglican cricket team, overseen by Bishop Errol Brooks, defeated the Methodist team, witnessed by Rev. Dunstan Richardson. The scores were Anglicans: 42 for 4 and winning by 6 wickets; and Methodists: 39 all out. Both teams played exceptionally well during the twelve overs a side match, providing some exciting moments for the spectators.
The cake walk dance was performed by a number of women from the two churches. The dance is said to have had its origins in the Southern United States and was developed on the slave plantations. For many years it was practiced exclusively by men, taking on some variations when women became involved. At this year’s event in Anguilla, a number of women, in the absence of performing menfolk, took over the male performance in black and white attire with their partners being other ladies in colourful wear.
The Easter Monday celebrations began with an Easter egg-hunt by children who roamed through the thick vegetation in the nearby churchyard in search of the multi-coloured imitations.
The celebrations attracted a sizeable crowd which took advantage of a number of food stalls with various delicacies, while live stringband and recorded music played in the background.
