On Tuesday, March 19, education officials and school principals of the Department of Education participated in a half-day training session on Social Media in Education.
This training effort forms part of the professional development mission of the department as a way of enhancing transferable skills in the social networking setting.
The workshop session focused on Twitter as a social media tool to mediate self-directed, life-long learning. It was facilitated by Dr.LeRoy Hill of the Anguilla Community College. He began his presentation with the theoretical underpinnings aligned to social media and social networking.
According to Dr. Hill, the aim of the session was to provide a contextual framework for the participants. They therefore took part in a pre-assessment needs analysis which revealed the need to focus on Twitter. The session also exposed participants to the affordances for using Twitter to establish personal learning networks for life-long learning within an online social networking setting.
It is hoped that follow-up sessions will take place in the near future.
