One of the troubling matters in Anguilla is the continuing closure of Malliouhana Hotel and Spa, overlooking the azure waters of Meads Bay.
Over the years, the magnificent hillside and beach property not only achieved rave reviews for its high level of service, but received coveted ratings as one of the leading small hotels of the world. Needless to say that made its owners, employees and Anguilla on a whole very proud – also given the fact that the luxury resort carries the island’s historic Amerindian name.
In its flourishing days the resort, which has the largest wine cellar in the Caribbean, attracted the rich and famous among its repeat guests, and employed over 200 staff members. It has the envied distinction of having been the island’s first luxury hotel and to really launch the up-market tourism industry.
Today, it is closed with only a few workers maintaining some semblance of activity, and many of its former employees, still out of work, are hoping to see it functioning again.
The question often being asked is: “When will Malliouhana reopen with a signed MOU between the Government and a new owner/developer?”
The answer provided is that a MOU should be signed before the middle of February. An official of the Anguilla Government, who requested anonymity, passed on this information to The Anguillian. It is now left to be seen whether this will be fact or fiction.
