The Anguilla Amateur Athletics Association (AAAA) proudly congratulates Team Anguilla on an impressive showing at the 2026 NACAC U18 & U23 Championships held in Querétaro, Mexico.
Competing against the Caribbean, North America and Central America’s most talented young athletes, Team Anguilla demonstrated determination, resilience and continued progress, delivering performances that reflect the steady advancement of athletics in Anguilla.
Representing the nation were Kavaj Connor (U18), Trenton Brooks (U23), Nazario Gumbs (U23) and J’Quan Samuels (U23) under the guidance of Head Coach Timothy Brooks and Coach Vance Fleming.
In the U18 Boys’ 100 metres, Kavaj Connor produced a commendable performance, finishing fourth in his heat in 10.94 seconds. Although he experienced some discomfort approaching the finish and eased slightly over the closing metres, Connor displayed excellent speed, composure and competitiveness against a strong field of regional sprinters.
In the U23 Men’s 100 metres, Trenton Brooks also finished fourth in his heat, clocking 10.60 seconds, narrowly missing qualification for the next round in one of the Championship’s highly competitive sprint events.
The highlight of Team Anguilla’s campaign came in the U23 Men’s 200 metres, where both Anguillian athletes recorded outstanding performances. Trenton Brooks produced a superb new personal best of 21.17 seconds, a significant milestone that underscores his continued development and growing competitiveness at the regional level. Nazario Gumbs followed with 21.68 seconds, his fastest performance of the 2026 season, further demonstrating his consistency and positive progression despite narrowly missing his lifetime best.
In the field events, J’Quan Samuels experienced discomfort in his lower back during the long jump competition. Following two attempts, he made the prudent decision to withdraw in consultation with his coaches in order to preserve himself for the high jump competition. The decision reflected a responsible athlete-first approach, prioritising his long-term health while ensuring he remained available for his stronger event in which he placed 2nd with a 2.08M jump.
While Team Anguilla did not progress to the medal rounds, the Championships provided invaluable international competition and further evidence that Anguilla’s athletes continue to close the gap with the region’s leading nations. The personal best by Trenton Brooks and the season-best performance by Nazario Gumbs were particularly encouraging indicators of the progress being made through sustained athlete development and international exposure.
The AAAA commends each athlete for representing Anguilla with pride, discipline and professionalism. The Association also acknowledges the outstanding leadership and commitment of Head Coach Brooks and Coach Fleming, whose dedication continues to play a vital role in the development of the nation’s athletes.
The Association extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of Anguilla, Commonwealth Sport Anguilla, parents, supporters and sponsors for their continued investment in athletics and their unwavering support of Team Anguilla. Their partnership provides the opportunities necessary for Anguillian athletes to compete at the highest regional level and continue their pursuit of sporting excellence.
As Team Anguilla returns home, the focus now shifts to building on these performances and continuing preparations for upcoming regional and international competitions. The AAAA remains committed to strengthening its athlete development pathway and creating opportunities for Anguillian athletes to excel on the regional and global stage while proudly representing the nation.
