If joy had a sound, it would’ve echoed through Da’Vida on the evening of 25th July 2025, where the Ebenezer Methodist Church brought its 195th Anniversary celebrations to a graceful close with a dinner and awards ceremony brimming with history, heart and hope. And if love had a look – it would’ve been seen in the eyes of every soul gathered there, celebrating not only a milestone, but a ministry built on generations of sacrifice, service, and unshakable faith.
For nearly two centuries, Ebenezer has stood not just as a sanctuary, but as a story – of people, of perseverance, and of praise. A story quite literally laid brick by brick by enslaved hands, as Bro. Sanford Richardson reminded the audience during his moving reflection.
“We are celebrating 195 years of God’s faithfulness… a building that was built by the hands of the enslaved. Yet over these 195 years we have been able to worship in freedom.”
And on this night, those church’s walls may not have been present – but the spirit of Ebenezer certainly was.
The ceremony unfolded with a gentle mix of warmth, laughter, and quiet reverence as guests enjoyed their meals, leading seamlessly into the presentation of awards later in the evening.
A total of ten individuals were recognised for their unwavering service to the life and ministry of Ebenezer:
Sis. Lolita Richardson and Sis. Vera Robinson were honoured with the Care Fund Steward Award, both widely admired for their steady, behind-the-scenes work in preparing the sanctuary and worship elements with quiet dedication and compassion.
Bro. Clive Richardson received the Maintenance Steward Award for his longstanding, meticulous commitment to the upkeep of the church’s property.
The Music Ministry Award went to Bro. Sanford Richardson, a beloved figure whose many roles – from preacher and steward to guitarist and mentor – have left an indelible mark on Ebenezer’s worship life and community spirit.
Tr. Janice Hodge was honoured with the Ministry to Women Award for her decades of service as a preacher, prison minister, educator, choir member and mentor.
Mr. Elkin Lloyd received the Ministry to Men Award in recognition of over 14 years leading the Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship.
Bro. Leeford Gumbs, recipient of the Upcoming Youth Award, has grown from Sunday School regular to youth leader and co-founder of GENTS, a nonprofit focused on mentoring young men across Anguilla.
Sis. Kenniva Brooks, awarded for her work in audio-visual ministry, is the tech-savvy force behind Ebenezer’s livestreams and digital outreach.
Bro. Hulia Carty Jr was given the Ministry to Youth Award, though his service spans far beyond that. From youth director to choir leader, his infectious energy, commitment and humour have made him a central figure in every corner of church life.
Finally, the special Spirit of Ebenezer Award was presented to Bro. Kenn Banks, a true friend to all. Ever dependable and endlessly kind, Kenn’s heart for service and love for the church embodies the very essence of what it means to be part of the Ebenezer family.
The night came to a close with a toast to the church’s 195 years – and eyes set squarely on the big one: the 200th anniversary.
While many events had been dreamt of for this year and simply couldn’t all be squeezed in, there’s a renewed sense of commitment and time to plan something even more fitting come 2030.
Until then, the people of Ebenezer will continue to do what they’ve always done: worship faithfully, serve joyfully, and walk boldly in the light of God’s promise.
