The Ministry of Education commends candidates of all institutions on Anguilla, both public and private, on their success in the May/June 2024 CXC and American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute examinations. Congratulations are also extended to their teachers, parents and all other partners who would have supported them along the way. Students who were not successful are encouraged to not be disheartened, but to take advantage of available opportunities to pursue desired subject areas.
The 2024 cohort of CAPE candidates holds historical significance for both the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) and the Anguilla Community College (ACC). For the ALHCS, it represents the final group of sixth form students to undertake their Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) under that institution, while being the inaugural participation of the ACC in CAPE. This marks a milestone in the island’s education system as the lower sixth form officially transitioned to the Anguilla Community College.
In the May/June 2024 examination period, the Anguilla Community College (ACC) presented a cohort of 66 candidates from the Lower Sixth Form for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE). A total of 316 subject entries were made. CAPE, administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), covers 69 Units in 36 subjects. In 2024, the ACC candidates enrolled for a total of 28 Units, comprising 21 Unit 1 courses and 7 Unit 2 courses within 28 subject areas. At the ALHCS, a total of 45 candidates in upper sixth form wrote subjects at the CAPE level. There were 187 subject entries.
The Ministry is pleased with the performance at CAPE at both institutions with 87.85% of the subject entries at the ALHCS and 70.67% at the ACC achieving acceptable grades. Of note is the achievement of 100% passes of students who sat exams in some 26 Subject Units across the two institutions.
At CSEC level, there were 154 candidates at the ALHCS with 1069 subject entries, 963 at General Proficiency and 106 at Technical Proficiency. Performance was satisfactory with 70.67% of the subject entries achieving grades I to III. Special mention is made of Industrial Technology, Technical Drawing, Music and Theatre Arts where all students taking the exams were successful.
Performance at the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) was commendable across the island with an increase in candidate entries and also an increase in the number of subject entries achieving mastery level. This demonstrates steady progress in the competence levels of students across Anguilla in the CCSLC programme, with 54.04% of the subject entries achieving the level of mastery, compared to 40.78% in 2023, 43.52% in 2022, and 43.42% in 2021.
The American Hotel and Lodging Management Programme offers students a pathway to further education and careers in the hospitality industry. Successful students can earn college credits, which are accepted by most US-based colleges or universities that offer Hospitality Studies. This programme is certified by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute.
Candidates in Anguilla from the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School have been participating in the Hospitality and Tourism Management Programme (HTMP) Year 1 for more than twenty years. Since 2014, candidates have also sat the Hospitality Skills, Tasks, and Results Training (START) examination, which is another assessment within this educational pathway.
The June 2024 examination results for HTMP and Hospitality START showed notable improvement. Pass rates for HTMP Year 1 and Hospitality START increased by 10 percentage points and 17 percentage points respectively, compared to the previous year.
