The Ministry of Education congratulates students of the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) on their success in the May/June 2023 CXC examinations as well as teachers, parents and all other partners who would have supported them along the way.
CARIBBEAN SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATE (CSEC)
In May/June 2023, a total of 170 candidates from the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School wrote the Caribbean Examinations Council’s (CXC’s) examination for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) at the Technical and General Proficiencies. There were 1111 subject entries of which 989 were at the General Proficiency and 122 at the Technical Proficiency. This year registered an increase in candidate entries and subject entries over last year. Comparatively, in June/July 2022, there were 150 candidate entries and 1030 subject entries. June/July 2021, there were 172 candidate entries and 1069 subject entries.
Subjects offered in Anguilla at Technical Proficiency included: Textiles, Clothing & Fashion, Family and Resource Management, Food Nutrition and Health, Technical Drawing, Industrial Technology Electrical and Electronics, Industrial Technology Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology Building and Furniture.
The CXC offered thirty-three subjects at the CSEC level. Students at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School were entered for 31 of these subjects; with Industrial Technology comprising of three areas of specialty (Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical Engineering and Building and Furniture).
This year, 1074 of the 1111 subject entries were completed and forwarded to CXC. The performance of candidates in the CSEC May/June 2023 examinations showed an increase when compared to the previous year 2022. Overall, seventy-seven point eight-four percent (77.84%) of the subject entries presented for General and Technical proficiencies achieved grades I to III. The 2023 overall pass rate can be compared with 74.95% in 2022, 81.72% in 2021, 75.64% in 2020 and 74.43% in 2019. The data show that 66.47% of the candidates achieved acceptable grades in four or more subjects. This statistic is compared to 62.00% in 2022, 63.00% in 2021 and 61.00% in 2020. This year, 96 candidates achieved acceptable grades in 5 or more subjects. In 2022, there were 85 candidates achieving acceptable grades in 5 or more subjects, 95 in 2021, and 84 in 2020. In addition, 51 of these candidates achieved acceptable grades in both English A and Mathematics. This compares to 45 candidates in 2022, 55 candidates in 2021, 66 candidates in 2020 and 51 candidates in 2019.
There was a decline in the level of grade achievement. Table 1 indicates that 46.83% of the subject entries achieved grades I and II. In 2022, this statistic was 50.00%, 52.03% in 2021 and 51.82% in 2020 of the subject entries achieved grades I and II. Of particular note, substantially fewer candidates achieved grades IV, V and VI.
CARIBBEAN ADVANCED PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS (CAPE)
In May/June 2023, a total of 107 candidates in both Upper and Lower Sixth Form at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School wrote subjects at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) level. There were 447 subject entries. This year registered a decrease in candidate entries and subject entries over last year. In June/July 2022, there were 118 candidates and 515 subject entries. In June/July 2021, there were 122 candidate entries and 557 subject entries. In July/August 2020, there were 130 candidates and 553 subject entries. The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) offers a total of 69 Units in 36 subjects at this level. At the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School a total of 46 Units (23 Unit 1 courses and 23 Unit 2 courses) in 31 subjects were offered in 2023.
The overall performance of candidates in the CAPE June/July 2023 examinations who were awarded grades I to V showed a decrease by approximately 2 percentage points (or 2.11pp) when compared to 2022. Eighty-six point seven three percent (86.73%) of the subject entries presented achieved grades I to V compared with 88.84% in 2022, 85.63% in 2021, 87.04% in 2020 and 84.31% in 2019. The average fall in attainment by candidates was not consistent across the 46 Units examined. Performance improved in 7 Units, declined in 14 units, and remained the same in 9 Units. In 2023, 15 Units were examined that did not have entries in 2022.
Forty-three percent of the subject entries achieved Grades I to III compared to 40.92% in 2022, 37.31% in 2021, 45.64% in 2020 and 43.00% in 2019. The statistics show that 43.36% of the subject entries achieved grades IV and V. This statistic was 47.92% in 2022, 48.32% in 2021, 41.39% in 2020 and 41.32% in 2019. In addition, 13.27% of the subject entries achieved unacceptable grades (VI and VII), up from 11.16% in 2022, down from 14.37% in 2021, up from 12.96% in 2020 and down from 15.68% in 2019. In 32 of the 46 Units, none of the candidates achieved grade I. These statistics indicate that there is still a critical need to raise the level of grade achievement.
CARIBBEAN CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY LEVEL COMPETENCE (CCSLC)
The Albena Lake -Hodge Comprehensive School
registered an increase in the number of subject entries and a decline in candidate entries for the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) programme this year. A total of 352 candidates were entered and there were 872 subject entries, of which 782 entries were completed. In 2022, there were 355 candidate entries and 843 subject entries with 768 entries were completed. In 2021, there were 388 candidate entries and 740 subject entries with 669 entries were completed.
The overall performance of candidates showed a decline in the level of competence awarded. There was a slight decrease in the number of subject entries achieving the mastery level. This year 38.97% of the subject entries achieved the level of mastery. In 2022, 41.28% of the subject entries achieved the level of mastery, compared with 42.13% in 2021, 36.82% in 2020 and 42.05% in 2019.
Anguilla registered an increase in the number of subject entries and a decline in candidate entries for the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) programme this year. A total of 361 candidates were entered and there were 915 subject entries, of which 821 entries were completed. In 2022, there were 365 candidate entries and 899 subject entries with 821 entries were completed. In 2021, there were 394 candidate entries and 774 subject entries with 695 entries were completed.
The overall performance of candidates showed a decline in the level of competence awarded. There was a slight decrease in the number of subject entries achieving the mastery level. This year 40.78% of the subject entries achieved the level of mastery. In 2022, 43.52% of the subject entries achieved the level of mastery, compared with 43.42% in 2021.
THE AMERICAN HOTEL & LODGING MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME
The American Hotel & Lodging Management Programme provides a pathway to further education and careers in Hospitality. Students passing these courses can receive college credits from most US-based colleges or universities once enrolled in Hospitality Studies. The programme is certified through the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute. Candidates in Anguilla have been taking part in the Hospitality and Tourism Management Programme (HTMP) Year 1 for more than twenty years at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School. In 2014, candidates sat their first examination in Hospitality Skills, Tasks, and Results Training (START) examination another assessment offered by this pathway. The results from the June 2023 sitting of examinations in this programme showed a decline in both HTMP Year 1 and Hospitality START by 3% over the previous year.
The Ministry of Education commends all students who sat CXC and American Hotel & Lodging examinations. To those students who may not have performed as well as they would have liked in their examinations, continue to work toward improvement and for those who performed well, keep up the hard work.
