Valley North Representative, Mrs. Shellya Rogers-Webster, has complimented the achievement of the Honourable Minister of Labour, Mr. Kenneth Hodge, who tabled the motion, and particularly the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee which had been working diligently over the past year to craft the National Minimum Wage Report.
Mrs. Rogers-Webster was among Parliamentarians making presentations to Parliament on Tuesday 11th July, 2023 after Minister Hodge had presented the Motion.
“Madam Speaker, I rise to commend the Minister responsible for Labour for bringing forward this National Minimum Wage motion,” she said. “I would also like to acknowledge the Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Dr. Wycliffe Fahie, and his team for the work that they have done.”
“I have found the report to be very thorough, and it is not too heavy. I was able to read through it rather quickly and I understood in detail all that has been referenced,” she said. “One can see that quite a bit of theoretical work went into this report. Also, it is evident that the Committee consulted with a number of individuals on the ground who would be directly affected by this (proposed) minimum wage.”
“I know, Madam Speaker, from personal experience, that in going though official documentation and draft legislation, it can be quite a bit of work and it requires a lot out of one mentally as well as physically,” Mrs. Rogers-Webster said. “Therefore, I would like to commend this committee, who, by all accounts, has not been paid for the work that they have engaged in. They have stuck to the task and have executed their work in great detail to provide a report that I can feel comfortable going to the general public with. In fact, I have already started to engage some businesses and employees in my constituency who might be affected by this.”
Mrs. Rogers-Webster promised that she will use whatever medium is available through the Committee and by the Minister to report on any major issues that members of her constituency might have as a result of the imposition of the minimum wage.
The Minimum Wage Motion received the full support of the House.
