Fellow Anguillians,
Today marks the opening of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, and I wanted to take a moment to address our community and emphasize the importance of preparedness and safety during this period.
Forecasters are predicting a “near-normal” season ahead, but it is crucial to remember that even in a season of such nature, we must not underestimate the potential impact of hurricanes. This does not change the robustness of our preparations or the need for each one of us to remain vigilant, well-informed, and ready to face any possible impact.
The Governor’s Office, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), and the National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC), have been diligently working to enhance our disaster response and preparedness plans. Together, we have refined improved communication systems, and strengthened emergency shelters.
Today, I want to assure you that the opening of this hurricane season does not alter the comprehensive preparations we have undertaken. Our dedication to your safety and well-being remains steadfast.
I urge you all to prioritize your safety and that of your loved ones by taking the following precautions:
1. Stay informed: Keep a close eye on weather forecasts and updates from reliable sources. Stay connected with local authorities through official channels for timely and accurate information.
2. Prepare an emergency kit: Assemble essential supplies such as non-perishable food, drinking water, batteries, flashlights, a first aid kit, medications, and important documents. Ensure your kit is readily accessible and easily transportable in case of evacuation.
3. Secure your property: Assess your home for any vulnerable areas that need reinforcement. Trim trees and branches that could pose a risk during strong winds. Install hurricane shutters or prepare sturdy boards to protect windows. Secure loose outdoor items that could become projectiles.
4. Create an evacuation plan: Identify safe evacuation routes and destinations, whether it’s a family member’s house or a designated shelter. Plan for any special needs or requirements of family members, including pets, and ensure you have a plan in place for their safety.
5. Stay connected and help one another: Reach out to neighbors, particularly the elderly or those with limited mobility, to ensure they are aware and prepared. Offer assistance when possible and be a source of support for one another during this challenging time.
The Governor’s Office, in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) and the National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC), remains committed to the safety and well-being of our community. Together, we will navigate this hurricane season with resilience and determination.
Remember, preparedness is key. By taking the necessary precautions now, we can minimize the impact of hurricanes on our island and recover more swiftly in their aftermath. Let us stand united, resilient, and prepared to face any challenges that lie ahead.
Wishing you a safe and prepared hurricane season
Sincerely,
Hon. Perin A. Bradley
