On Sunday afternoon, January 22nd, crowds of athletes and spectators gathered at the Almond tree outside of the grounds of Ashley’s Supermarket to participate in the 16th Annual Mile-Long Race for children and adults alike.
Scores of children of various ages, representing various schools and sports clubs eagerly prepared to take part in the high caliber race that garners great enthusiasm year after year. The races kicked off at precisely 3 o’clock.
Spearheading the race, as accustomed, was Coach Alexis Ryan who is a loyal personality in the promotion of children’s sports on the island. Mr. Ryan is committed to playing an invaluable role in this event each year.
The Anguillian spoke with him concerning this year’s races: “What we are having today,” he said, “is the 16th Annual One-Mile Classic Races. This event signifies the opening of the track and field season for the year. Today we have some 210 participants. Schools represented for these races include: Valley Primary, Orealia Kelly Primary, Vivien Vanterpool Primary, Morris Vanterpool Primary, the private schools, and the high school. The ages range from five to thirty-plus.

Mr. Ryan provided the results of races, in terms of scores, which were quite extensive. Following is a report on the first, second and third positions in each category:
