Looking closely at the current state of affairs in our schools, schoolyards, churches, neighbourhoods and at the community, we would see how much we have strayed from Nature’s path and what we’ve become. The events occurring in our communities are a microcosm of what’s happening in the rest of the world today. We make reference to Satan going to and fro in the earth like a ravening wolf seeking to maim and destroy.
Satan knows in more ways than you and I can consider, how to trick us. He is a cunning adversary, so cunning that he catches us with the line every time. He’s seeking souls, knows how to get us to defile and desecrate our God given temples/bodies e.g. the organ systems of our bodies divinely endowed to support our health, strength, welfare and well-being.
Citing the latest pandemic, the immune system has largely been ignored or has been reduced to just an afterthought. When we fall ill, this is when we need our immune system to be on its game more than ever. Even before that, we need to ensure that our immune system is in good working order – with good sound wholesome nutrition.
We treat our possessions better than we do ourselves/bodies. One example is our blatant disregard for what’s sacred and wholesome – encouraging the destruction of wholesome natural foods, substituting it for foods lacking their essential health promoting nutrients; junk foods, refined and processed foods. Most of us are not getting enough exercise and we commit to energy on material possessions. Most of our foods are hybrid foods. When was the last time you saw corn on the cob with a variety of different and brightly coloured grains of corn, or multicoloured pigeon peas in their shells? We need to take better care of our health & by extension ourselves. Here are some examples of how we are defiling our bodies and creating our own health problems in the process. Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, autism, anxiety issues, Parkinson’s, are all preventable and/or reversible, however these conditions are becoming more chronic:
? Poor diet, food devoid of essential health promoting nutrients and other refined/processed junk foods.
? Consuming foods grown with insidiously dangerous pesticides; foods containing non-nutritive additives, colourings, preservatives, artificial sweeteners and other ingredients that do more harm that good to our health.
? Foods with excessive amounts of salt, dangerous hidden fats and/or sugar, which lead to conditions the preventable/reversible non-communicable degenerative conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, autism, anxiety issues, Parkinson’s. Even sickle-cell can be triggered by poor diets.
Our physical, mental and emotional, social and spiritual health are interconnected. Each one depends on the other’s state of health. Other aspects of our being, just as important are: social citizenship, spiritual and social responsibility to each other and to our communities.
Nutrition, good or bad, impacts on all of these aspects in our lives. Therefore we need to ensure we have good food security so that, at least to some degree, we can ensure our diets are wholesome and nutritious.
Nutrition, aggressive and violent behaviour are closely linked. Essential nutrients such as: vitamins, minerals and the essential healthy fats also influence our behaviour. Not having the proper nutrients in the right proportions have significant baring on our sanity. The foods we consume can make some of us very irritable, seriously ill and prone to violent outbursts – even criminal behaviour. Proper nutrition and our ability to learn are closely linked. We are reactive in our approaches to dealing with circumstances i.e. we tend to close the barn door after the animals have already gone out. We have a tendency to blame the individual’s behaviour on socioeconomic status. In poverty stricken communities, residents may not have access to or have available to them healthier food choices, but why is this? This lack of proper nutrition impacts on social behaviour.
Certainly, socioeconomic status contributes to poor nutrition. Other influencing factors to behaviour include: levels of education and economic status. All of these factors contribute to our behaviour patterns. The role of nutrition simply can no longer be ignored. The research confirms links between diet and hyperactivity of which refined sugar and other processed foods are the main culprits. Specific foods create unpleasant behaviours, highlighting the connection between nutrition and aggressive violent behaviour. Missing essential nutrients from the diet cause dysfunction in our ability to reason and think rationally.
A study done in 2002, with 230 young adult prisoners: half of the group received a placebo concoction. The other half received a nutritional supplement containing essential fats e.g. omega 3/6 and other essential vitamins and minerals required for optimum health. The findings showed there was 36% less disciplinary offences in the prisoners who received the nutritional supplementation, compared to those who received the placebo concoction. The clear message was, boosting the diet with wholesome nutrition improves social behaviour.
Another study involved sixty eight prisoners who had their diets modified. The prisoners were unaware they were part of a study, so they were not told that their diets were secretly modified. All refined sugars were removed from the diet. Over time their behaviours were assessed. The results were compared to the time before the start of the study, and the previous study that showed the 36% reduction in offenses. This time the study revealed an 80% reduction in behavioural offences among the prisoners. Again the message is clear: by boosting the diet with essential vitamins, minerals and omega essential fats had greater effect. However, the biggest and most effective game changer in the study was by far the removal the refined sugars from the diet.
