The natural defences of the body are such that the entire system has to be maintained at peak efficiency. If we could maintain that level of efficiency, it is unlikely that many disease conditions will ever occur. Disease conditions that involve pain and/or stiffness of the musculoskeletal system will not occur. There will be less cases of diabetes, bacterial, fungal & viral infections, and less of a chance they will be able to take root and establish themselves. There are two important factors that we must take into consideration: Malnutrition and how effective the nutritional recommendations made will be. These two factors are essential for our body’s defences to be effective at protecting us against illness & infection. Malnutrition, whether due to protein, caloric deprivation, or any form of vitamin or mineral deficiency, increases the likelihood of infections, slow healing after severe trauma, surgery or burns to the body.
Our nutritional status has to improve. Whatever the recommendations for change, the recommendations must improve the body’s defences above the level at which it’s currently functioning. Improving our nutritional status increases our defences to the point where a large number of diseases will not occur. If the condition already exists, healing & recovery from illness will speed-up. Many conditions respond to nutrition therapy. The simple fact that an individual has recovered, is a testament to the revitalisation of the body’s defences. Unfortunately, there is very little reference to the role of nutrition & its importance in preventing diseases. Malnutrition is quite widespread. Many people are both malnourished & therefore undernourished – undernourished therefore malnourished. Eating lots of food doesn’t mean you are getting the full complement of your daily requirement of nutrients, if any at all. Food today has to appeal to the senses i.e. it has to appeal to the eyes, smell & taste buds for it to be even considered worthy for consumption. Unfortunately, not much thought is given to the nutritional content of the food we consume before or after it’s prepared. As a result for most, their body’s defences are functioning below their best.
The research recommends improving the nutritional status of people with cancer, which is significant when addressing the lesions. Anyone starving for nutrients is much less able to endure the serious insults to the body from infection, trauma, even cancer.
Antioxidant nutrients such as: amino acids, enzymes, hormones, vitamins, minerals are required by the body to maintain basic bodily functions. It’s therefore logical to think that if the body is to continue carrying out basic survival functions, it will require additional nutrients to effectively defend itself against any such insults from infections and cancers. When the body is under attack, it needs to replenish spent nutrients plus have extra in reserve to provide a substantial defence against any insult it may encounter, including cancers.
Without substantial research evidence, the cancer industry suggested that the use of nutrients is harmful to people with cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy are toxic substances, which add to an already toxic condition. Conventional cancer treatments are designed to remove the cancer which is fine, but this just isn’t enough. More often than not, nothing is done to improve the body’s own ability to successfully fight cancer or any other insult it may encounter.
The cancer industry has used three baseless statements to discourage the use of nutrient supplements in treating cancers.
? The industry says nutrient supplements are harmful to cancer patients.
? That they interfere with conventional treatments and therefore ineffective against cancer.
The goal of Orthomolecular nutrition is to improve the efficiency of the body to effectively defend itself. Using nutrition to treat any condition, including cancer the approach is to:
? First examine, identify & correct the defects in the individual’s nutritional status i.e. getting rid of toxic, artifact foods like sucrose (your regular table sugar), the biggest culprit causing cancer, and refined/processed foods.
? If nutritious, special foods and preferences should be considered. The idea is to remove the pleasure from eating, so you are eating for your health & not for emotional satisfaction.
Research on nutrient supplements on the treatment of cancer is skewed. Researchers used very low and ineffective doses of the particular nutrient to make misleading & misguided claims about nutrient supplements. The results will obviously be inaccurate. One such nutrient supplement that has been deemed ineffective, despite the fact that the research evidence showed it to be successful in treating cancer, is the intravenous administration of large doses of vitamin C/ascorbic acid. Treating cancer using Orthomolecular nutrition has two main objectives:
? To enhance the body’s ability to destroy & contain a tumour and…
? To be able to destroy the tumor.
Standard cancer treatments are directed at the tumor, using surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Orthomolecular nutrition is aimed primarily at improving the body’s defences against any assault including cancers. All cancer patients will benefit from this approach. On average, highly nourished patients live longer and have a better quality of life, compared to the less properly nourished patients. Even the worst types of cancers e.g. sarcomas respond best to vitamin C/ascorbic acid therapy.
Chemotherapy is toxic and foreign to the body and damages vital organ systems e.g. the digestive & immune systems of the body, that can only mount a very feeble defence. When treating cancer with nutrient supplements:
? Treatment should not be directed at the tumour.
? The person must be educated about diet, nutrient supplements, how it would improve his/her resistance and the immune defence against cancer.
The goal is never to prove one treatment superior to another, although it might be.
The cancer patient will need to make diet and other lifestyle changes, e.g.
? Eliminate all junk foods from the diet i.e. all refined/processed white foods, foods containing added sugar, preservatives & allergic foods.
? Eliminate toxic foods that predisposes you to cancer e.g. caffeine, theophylline, theobromine in teas and coffees.
? Eliminate milk products rich in estrogens which have been linked to precancerous lesions in the breast.
? Reduce, even eliminate, animal protein from the diet.
? Increase your intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, eat raw foods whenever possible and…
? Increase your intake of oily fishes e.g. salmon, mackerel and so on, for their omega 3 essential fatty acids.
