The COVID-19 pandemic underpinned many conversations among healthcare officials, epidemiologists, and government officials world-wide over the past two weeks.
The decrease in covid cases caused by the more serious and deadly Delta variant, and the increase in covid cases caused by the milder and more easily transmitted Omicron variant, have given rise to new hope – that an end to the COVID-19 pandemic is in sight.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been a leading voice on the disease and has relied on the science of medicine and data trends for guidance in arresting and managing the global disease caused by the SARS-coV-2 virus.
“Looking at the patterns seen in the UK, South Africa, and Israel, and some areas of the US, we see that cases have peaked and are starting to come down rather sharply. If the pattern follows the trend that we have been seeing, I believe we will see a turnaround in the early weeks of February”, Dr. Fauci observed.
He indicated that, “the long-term strategy is that we will get to the point where we see the level of infection get to below ‘the area of control’ – meaning we are not eliminating it [covid], we are not eradicating it, but it is at such a low level where it is integrated into the general respiratory infections that we have learned to live with, where it doesn’t disrupt us and create a fear of severe outcomes.
“We also have to be prepared for the worst case-scenario where we get another variant that has characteristics that would be problematic. If we have things in place like masks, therapies, testing, and vaccines available to prevent persons progressing to advanced disease, we can get to that ‘area of control.’”
He stated emphatically: “Vaccination and vaccine equity are the central pillars of ending this pandemic. What we do know, even with Omicron, is that boosting makes a major, major difference in protecting you from hospitalisations and severe outcomes.”
Despite the high number of COVID-19 cases globally, many health experts are clinging to these glimmers of hope, and government officials are considering relaxing health protocols, ending travel bans, and questioning the validity of continuing to classify the status of COVID-19 as an “emergency situation”.
