Seven Anguillian athletes and officials returned to the island after a brief stint in the Isle of Man where they participated in the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games. All the athletes made credible performances. Most notable were the efforts of Jonicia Richardson and Zharnel Hughes. Jonicia advanced to the semifinals of the girls 400m dash but was eliminated after placing fourth with a time of 65.28 seconds.

Zharnel rewrote the record books as he set a new Anguillian national junior record of 10:81 seconds in the first heat, and again in the semi finals with a time of 10:76 seconds. However, he was unable to improve upon his time for the finals having placed eight with a time of 10:92 seconds. Team mate Renee Fleming placed sixth in the first heat of the women’s 100m dash with a time of 13:36 seconds but was unable to advance to the second round.

Cyclist Elroy Laud and Deion Richardson faced rather frigid conditions and formidable competition as they participated in both the time trial and Road Race. Elroy placed 29th with a time of 10:37 minutes and Deion placed 40th in 11:58 minutes. Both athletes improved with the Road race as Elroy placed 27th and Deion 32nd respectively. Elroy was the only Caribbean rider who was able to remain glued with the leading pack after several rounds on the circuit. However, the experienced Australian and British cyclists dominated the field eventually sharing the spoils. Coaches Mrs. Althea Hodge and Mr. Emmanuel Laud were pleased with the efforts of the athletes but also saw the need for improvement through consistent training and more exposure.

The Anguilla Amateur Athletics Association and the Anguilla Cycling Association would like to congratulate all the athletes for a commendable effort and would admonish them to continue working hard.
