Last Saturday evening, the Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association(AAVA), in conjunction with the Sports Department, celebrated the achievements of the recently accomplished cohort of 14 coaches and 4 referees who engaged in a one-month training session. It was organised by the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association(ECVA) and Cassova. It was indeed a hallmark on the Anguillian scene as never before had such a feat been accomplished in one sitting.
In attendance at the celbrations were The Honourable Mr Merrick Richardson (Ministerial Assistant for Sports, Youth and Culture and former volleyball star); Mr Andre Collins (Director of Sports); Mr Delano Mussington, (Liaison between sports and the Volleyball Association), the executive of the AAVA and the awardees. For the Coaches certification, the following persons emerged successful:
Connie Liburd, Omari Hamilton, Jonathan Gumbs, Marsha Harrigan, Marcia Hodge, David Christmas, Janai Lake, Daren Webster, Khalidah Banks, Nadia Benjamin-Linton, Shermin Wrensford-Adams, Nzingha Banks, Lester Connor & Rikiesha Leveret.
The four certified referees were:
Janai Lake, Omari Hamilton. Tavia Nelson & Jonathan Gumbs
While the main goal of the evening was to recognise the accomplishments, of our new coaches and athletes, the ceremony also presented an opportunity for us to reflect on past accomplishments and to recalibrate our focus for the new challenges ahead. Surprisingly, it also brought a sense of hope that we would soon rise above the dark cloud cast by COVID 19 and resume playing our well-beloved sport.
The AAVA is committed to promoting the development of volleyball in Anguilla both at a recreational and professional level. We look forward to continued partnership with the Sports Department and, by extension, the Government of Anguilla in order to achieve our goal.
