The former long-serving Anguillian educator, Mrs. Ermine Winifred Carty, of South Hill, was laid to rest on Saturday, October 30, at Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, following the funeral at the Pro-Cathedral of St. Mary. She was born on June 8, 1941, and passed away on October 2, 2021.
Mrs. Carty joined the teaching profession at an early age in Anguilla, and served in various capacities, among them being a Principal – and Chief Education Officer, Pre and Primary Education. She held this appointment until she retired in 1996. After retiring, she served as a temporary teacher at a number of schools including the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School. She also served as an External Examiner for the CSEC practical examinations. She was initially trained at the Antigua State College and the St Kitts Teachers’ College. Mrs. Carty later attended Redding University in the United Kingdom and graduated with a Diploma in Advanced Educational Studies.
The eulogy was delivered by her brother, Mr Stephen Franklin, who normally resides in Toronto, Canada.
The tributes were led by Mrs. Evalie Bradley, a senior leader in the Bethel Methodist Church.
The Officiating Ministers at Mrs. Carty’s funeral were Rev. Vincia Celestine; Rev. Wilmoth Hodge; Rev. Dunstan Richardson – and Rev. Lindsay Richardson, who preached the sermon. He referred to Jesus’ repeated entreaties to Peter: “Do you love me? Feed my lambs.” In an emotional plea, Rev. Richardson spoke about the need for parents to love their children and to give them good directions in life; and he mentioned the late Mrs. Carty’s admonition to his wife, (Mrs. Charmaine Rey-Richardson), to take care of the young people (in school and church).
In comforting the bereaved family, Rev. Richardson took the opportunity to thank a number of “prayer warriors” for lifting up his ailing brother, Melvin in their prayers, attracting much support from his listeners.
