A team of business students from the Anguilla Community College (ACC) held a press conference on Tuesday, July 20th, to sensitise the public on the path they have followed in the course of their studies in Business Management and to inform interested persons concerning the various courses being offered at the institution.
Under the theme “Learn by Doing”, leader of the group, Ms. Kurlyn Smith, gave a synopsis of the purpose of the press conference: “We, the members of group 1 in the Business Management course at the Anguilla Community College, were tasked with planning and executing a business event. To this end, we took the unanimous decision to conduct a press conference for the purpose of effectively marketing the short courses and BTEC Level 3 courses being offered at the ACC.”
Ms. Smith emphasised that the group chose to take the route of a press conference because they realised that this medium is one of the most effective means of disseminating information to the public.
Speaking at the conference, the Honourable Minister of Education, Ms. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers noted that the press conference was a great opportunity to market the course offerings of the Anguilla Community College. “I believe this is a great exercise for these students in terms of managing a business,” she said. “You have a lot to think about when you consider managing a business…It takes a concerted effort to ensure that your event comes off as smoothly as possible and that you achieve the intended results.
“The intended result today is to advertise to the general public, making our people aware as to why they should be interested in taking these short courses with the Anguilla Community college…I want to commend all of the students for launching this press conference. It is a testimony to the fact that they really do care about their course work. I am impressed by the handling of this press conference by the students, and I think that if all of our students throughout the system use methods such as this, then we would have a much more professional workforce in Anguilla.”
Members of the group made presentations relative to their promotions of various short courses. Kedeane Ruan presented on Certified Front Desk Representation; Certified Hospitality Training, Supervisory Management, Customer Services, and Excelling in Excel. Alicia Laing made presentations on International Cuisine, Sushi Making, Pasta Making, Menu Planning, Food and Beverage Labour Cost Control, and Purchasing and Materials Management. The group leader, Kurlyn Smith, then promoted courses offered at Level 3. These include: Information and Communication Technology, English for Tertiary Purposes, and Introduction to Accounting.
In reviewing the event, Ms. Smith, observed: “The event was a great success. All who gave addresses, as well as the media personnel, at the end of it all, commented on the fact that it was a rewarding experience. The President of the College, Dr. Kenneth Williams, stated that the group had set the trend for marketing the ACC courses.
