The Anguilla Community College (ACC) is pleased to announce that six (6) persons have successfully achieved the certification ‘Certified Board Governance Officer / Certified Board Member’. The certification is issued by the University of the Virgin Islands, Centre for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (UVI CELL), and the Anguilla Community College. UVI and ACC have partnered since 2018 to deliver governance training to Board Directors and Senior Executives. The most recent training saw attendance of Board Members from the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority (AASPA), the Water Corporation of Anguilla (WCA), the Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB) and the Anguilla Social Security Board (ASSB).
The most recent certifications have been awarded to Mr Kennedy Hodge, Ms Glenneva Hodge, Ms Elidad Jacobs-Baez, Mr Kerith Lake, Mr Warren Buddle and Mr Larry Franklin. Other Board Directors will be taking the examination for the Good Governance Certification in early April.
Governance is a growing area of importance globally. It is critical for all types of organisations including public institutions, statutory bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOS), charities and private businesses. Whereas the emphasis previously may have appeared to rest on maximizing earnings as a sign of success, there is a growing sense of urgency around bringing a broader focus to bear on how leaders in all types of organisation take decisions for long-term sustainability, and other areas of concern such as economic inequality, climate change, health and wellness and corporate citizenship (the latter refers to an entity’s contribution to its local community or society as a whole). Good governance helps underwrite high organisational performance, engenders stakeholder confidence, and improves an organisation’s ability to respond to, or undertake, change.
The second leg of the governance training initiative is Public Financial Management for Board Directors and Executives. This will cover fundamental financial concepts, risk and control, the budget process, budget management – as well as understanding financial statements and forecasting. The class is expected to begin on April 13, 2021, subject to subscription. Senior Executives, Directors on Boards, mid to senior Public Officers, and interested members of the public, are encouraged to attend.
