Keen readers of The Anguillian newspaper may have observed a change in the volume numbering in its masthead. That change began on Friday, December 4th, 2020, with the volume number printed as “Volume 23, No. 01.”
The new numbering means that The Anguillian newspaper is now 22 years old. It began its printing and publishing on December 4th, 1998, and has therefore entered its 23rd year. This makes The Anguillian the only local newspaper to have survived the rigours and challenges which confronted national newspapers over the years.
Even now, with the growth of social media on various platforms, presenting readership and advertising challenges to the print media, The Anguillian newspaper holds its own independent ground. It continues to forge ahead and is largely supported and highly regarded at home and abroad.
The Anguillian was founded by Nat Hodge following his retirement as Director of the Government’s Department of Information & Broadcasting (Radio Anguilla) on September 15, 1998. After a period of critical planning and analysis, he began publishing The Anguillian newspaper on December 4th that year.
For a few years, it was printed at Mac’s Printing in Anguilla. Later, the newspaper transitioned to the Daily Herald in St. Maarten to meet the demands for colour and broadsheet printing.
Today, the newspaper, which also has an online edition, has built up a sizeable and well-preserved hard copy set of archives. The book-like volumes are at The Anguillian newspaper’s office for private and public research, as well as posterity. A third batch is at Heritage Collection Museum, also for research and posterity.
The archives are updated annually. A new set is to be dispatched to the off-island archival producers shortly.
The Anguillian is indebted and grateful to all of its readers at home and abroad, as well as to its various sources of information and faithful advertisers, for their kind support over the years.
Your national newspaper looks forward to your continued support and involvement in the years and changing times ahead.
