Health Awareness walk

Cancer is Everybody’s Business!  That is the theme of the Anguilla Cancer Society, a recently established organisation, whose purpose is to create cancer awareness among the general public by promoting early detection through educational programmes, encouraging and promoting a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise, and providing a network of support to persons affected by cancers.

The month of October has been a busy one for the Anguilla Cancer Society (ACS).  With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Anguilla Cancer Society undertook a number of activities to create awareness and highlight the disease of Breast Cancer.  Activities held during the month of October 2012 included:

Breast Cancer Awareness meeting

•    On Friday, 19th October, there was a Breast Cancer featured radio programme on Radio Anguilla’s “The Zone” at 9:00 am.  Guests for this programmed included: Dr. Clyde Bryan, two female breast cancer survivors, members of Nagico Health Insurance, and a member of the Anguilla Cancer Society.

•    The 2nd Annual “Walk of Hope” sponsored by Cap Juluca Hotel was held on Wednesday, 24th October. This event is growing in popularity and one that participants look forward to.  It is the aim of the Anguilla Cancer Society to make the “Walk of Hope” bigger and better each year, and bigger and better it was for 2012.  The event saw at least 500 persons participating this year over an estimated 300 persons of 2011.

•    On Friday, 26th October at 7:00 pm, two health presentations were held at the Teachers’ Resource Center.  The topics were Gastric Cancer and Breast Cancer, by Dr. Erole Hobdy and Dr. Preston Dalglish respectively.  Both doctors are practicing Oncologists and Hematologists with private practice in the US Virgin Islands.  Both presentations were well received by all those in attendance.  The event was attended by members of the public, in particular students and faculty of the St. James Medical School and private medical practitioners on the island.

•    Various radio programmes were held throughout the month of October, in particular, every Wednesday morning on Kool FM and Klass FM by members of the Anguilla Cancer Society.  These programmes were used to create awareness about breast cancer and promote the different activities for the month to the general public.

The Anguilla Cancer Society would like to thank all who have participated in and supported the various activities held to promote the awareness of breast cancer throughout the month of October. Of special mention are our sponsors: Cap Juluca Hotel for the Walk of Hope and refreshments, Money Gram for t-shirts, the Anguilla Social Security Board, Digicel and Women With Heart who provided funds towards free mammogram testing; those who have collaborated and partnered with us:  The Nutrition and Health Promotion Department, The St. James Medical School, The Anguilla Community College, Hughes Medical Center, Drs. Hobdy and Dalglish, The Educational Department, C & N Jumbo Plaza, LIME, Max Printing and the various media houses. Thank you all, the Anguilla Cancer Society looks forward to your continued support.
