The Valley, Anguilla, Monday 23 November 2020. “My dad loved planting and husbandry, and we thank the members of the ABC for honouring him in this way.” These are the heartfelt words of Marva Richardson, the visibly grieving daughter of Leslie V. Richardson, a member of the Anguilla Beautification Club until his death on 1 March 2019.

In honour of his memory, members of the Anguilla Beautification Club planted an Avocado sapling at his home where his wife Gertrude (also a member of the ABC) and Marva live. The tree planting ceremony took place just before dusk on Saturday 21 November 2020, three days after what would have been Leslie’s 73rd birthday. Following the tree planting, where Marva delivered brief and sincere words of appreciation, the small group sat and enjoyed the sunset – and each other’s company with light refreshments, provided by the members. Among those at the ceremony were two of Leslie’s sisters, Irma (a former ABC member) and Bertha, who were also regular participants in the ABC’s Flower and Garden Show.

The members of the Club would like to thank members Jeremy “Jerry” Brown of the Anguilla Garden Centre for providing the tree at a heavily discounted price, and Karle Connor of Anguilla Homes and Gardens for digging and preparing the hole for the planting. The members’ hope is the tree will flourish and be fruitful in the fullness of time.
