Viceroy Anguilla which boasts various recreational facilities as part of its up-scale property has again come the assistance of the Alwyn Allison Richardson Primary School at West End by further enhancing the basketball court there.
The resort’s latest contributions are basketball rims which were commissioned on Friday evening, October 26, when members of Viceroy’s Executive Committee engaged students in an exciting match.
The Elected Representative for Long Bay and West End, Walcott Richardson, was grateful for the resort’s assistance. “I wish to thank Viceroy and particularly Mr. Jeff David for being very supportive of this venture,” Mr. Richardson said. He recalled that two years ago he and his wife donated the first equipment for the basketball court. This is comprised two blackboards; two rims; two nets and six balls.
“We are now having an upgrade of the court and we look forward to further upgrading of the facilities,” the Minister continued. “We have had the lights installed by Viceroy as well and its technical people are going to look at the cracks on the court to undertake repair work eventually. I am very happy to know that we have a community-minded property like Viceroy and whenever it is possible for them to make a contribution to do so because of their love for the people in this community. I am looking forward to seeing other donors come on board to contribute. There is so much to be done and if we don’t build this community, where we live, the future will be very dim and troubling.”
The Minister noted that there were many children in the two western villagers who were keenly involved in basketball and football and spoke about the assistance he is providing towards their further interest in sport. “I have acquired some land in this area, just between the school and Viceroy, for [additional] sport facilities and there also other pieces I want to attach to it. Hopefully in 2013 we will have that facility up and running as well.”
Replying, Viceroy’s outgoing General Manager, Jeff David, said that part of his becoming attached to Anguilla was his love for the people. “It is all about the children and Viceroy has always been sports-oriented as this establishes camaraderie, healthy competition, team-work and pride,” he stated. “We would like to use that as a vehicle to keep children out of trouble and healthy. We are going to continue as a family.I just happened to be lucky enough to be the figurehead behind but it is the energy of five hundred people at Viceroy that makes this happen.”
Mr. David said that Viceroy was bringing in over two hundred basketball shoes to be disbursed to school children at West End and other parts of the island as well. He also pledged that Viceroy would continue to support the basket camps and the Anguilla Tennis Academy.
