The former Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mr. Cardigan Connor, is still continuing to be delighted over Anguilla’s fourth win as the Best Island of the Caribbean Award – even though he is no longer in the Government of Anguilla.
Mr. Connor was given responsibility for tourism by the former Premier and Minister of Tourism, Mr. Victor Banks, during the past five years in office of the Anguilla United Front Government. Mr. Connor was delighted when Anguilla, having quickly recovered from Hurricane Irma which heavily impacted its tourism industry in September 2017, was declared Best Island in the Caribbean, went on to be a consecutive winner in 2018, 2019 and now 2020.
Earlier this month, he shared the island’s fourth award with the newly elected and appointed Minister of Tourism, Mr. Haydn Hughes, the Anguilla Progressive Movement Government’s District 6 Road South representative.
Mr. Connor expressed his delight over Anguilla’s tourism achievements in the House of Assembly on July 17, 2020.
“Mr. Speaker, I see Anguilla going forward as a relay,” he stated. “The Honourable Member for District 6, mentioned about our relationship and our sharing in the award of Anguilla being named number one four years in a row by Travel & Leisure. Madam Speaker, it is a moment that has never happened in the history of tourism in Anguilla.
“So, despite the challenges that we face with the Covid-19, Anguilla stands proud in tourism as the Destination of Choice in the Caribbean. And [because of] the work of the Honourable former Minister of Health [Evans Rogers] and his team, Anguilla is Covid-19 free today. As a result, there are so many persons on the outside knocking on the doors to come to Anguilla.
“It means, Madam Speaker, that we have left Anguilla in a very good place.”
