Road Bay, Sandy Ground, is a beehive of activity on the new cargo jetty where the construction work has past the land area and has now entered the inshore waters.
It is a 13-million US dollor project funded by the UK Government – to include a number of upland facilities as part of the port development. The new jetty is being built just south of the existing jetty which was originally constructed in 1971 by Royal Engineers. Since then, it deteriorated badly, was repaired a few years ago; and is now being replaced by a more efficient and longer jetty.
The new jetty, with dynamics for roll-on roll-off operations, will have a length of some 187 metres (over 600 feet), about 10-15 metres longer than then existing jetty. It is estimated to be completed in thirteen months. The contract involves a joint venture agreement between Kelectric &Associates of St. Vincent and Edgehill & Associates of Barbados.
