Considering the severity of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Anguilla is announcing further mitigation measures, this time specifically, for property owners.
The first measure is to postpone the due date of the first instalment from June 1st to October 1st 2020.
Therefore, for all 2020 Property Tax Demand Notices, property owners have an additional four months to pay the first portion without consequence. The second instalment remains unchanged and due December 1st 2020.
The Government of Anguilla (GoA) has increased the Property Tax discount from 5% to 10% on current year tax. In fairness to property owners who have paid in full in previous years, there is no discount on arrears. For property owners this means that, in addition to the Residential Building Exemptions described below, the 2020 tax is reduced by 10% if the account is paid in full on or before 1st October 2020.
All accounts already paid, and which benefited from the 5% discount, will see this amount automatically updated on their property tax account resulting in an advanced payment to next year’s bill. There is no need to visit the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) to receive the additional 5%.
The existing measures remain in place:
• A reduction in taxable value of EC$50,000 on all residential buildings is automatically applied.
• A reduction of EC$250,000 in taxable value is given to all Belongers 65 years or older. This equates to a maximum deduction of EC$750 on their property tax bill. This reduction applies to ONE residential building only. All persons who are eligible for the Senior Exemption, and who have not applied, are required to visit the Property Tax Unit at the IRD. The Property Tax bill for 2020 can then be reassessed.
A minimum taxable amount of EC$250 for all residential buildings still applies for all property owners, including persons 65 years or older. For all other building types, the minimum taxable amount is EC$500.
The 10% discount also applies to minimum tax if paid on or before 1st October 2020.
If a property owner has difficulties in making the full payment, he/she should contact the IRD Compliance and Collections Unit as soon as possible to discuss a payment plan. For more information, please call the IRD at (264) 497-8334, email inlandrevenue@gov.ai or visit the office at our new location in the former NBA Building (ground floor, rnain entrance) between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. The IRD looks forward to continue serving you in 2020 and beyond.
