On Sunday 29th December 2019 Klassique Academy of Dance & Performing Arts Anguilla (KADPAA) travelled to St. Kitts as invited guest performers at the 40th Anniversary of the Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant. The group consisted of eleven (11) dancers: Nandi Edwards, Janet Guzman, Mariska Matthew, Deronique Smith, Rhaine Hodge, Shakela Morton, Sumayah Carty, Kaori Mockett, Ella Rydon, Jaichur Jackman and Cayana Lake. There was also one instructor who participated in the performance – Kerisa Benjamin; one member of the Board / Management – Mrs. Deslyn Smith; and one parent as co-chaperone – Mrs. Charanell Jackman. The group met with their Artistic Director, Mr. Isaiah Luther, who was already on the island preparing for the performance – along with affiliate consultant, Mr. Aron Gumbs.
Klassique Academy, a non-profit organization and prominent dance company in Anguilla, has been in existence for 12 years, providing aspiring dancers the opportunity and outlet to build on their passion for the art. In 2019, the company embarked on a new strategic direction geared towards awareness of its brand while providing opportunities that broaden the horizon of its members (dancers). The Academy views dance as an important art that shapes the cultural landscape of Anguilla and believes that investment in youth will help to preserve, maintain and continue building on what makes Anguilla culturally unique in the region. This was exhibited consistently over the two days spent in St. Kitts, promoting both the Academy and the island of Anguilla collectively. The Academy accepts members starting at the age of 3 years.
The 2019 Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant was held on Monday 30th December, and the group performed choreography to a mixed selection of music from the Lion King soundtrack / movie which was the overall theme of the show. The experience was one that the Academy is confident will build on the student’s enthusiasm for dance, self esteem and work ethics as they journey through life.
The Klassique Academy held several fundraising activities to defray costs for this trip and would like to take the opportunity to extend gratitude to several organizations and individuals whose contribution to its endeavors made this trip possible.
First, we thank the organizers and committee of the pageant for the invitation and invaluable opportunity and experience. Also, our community partners, Department of Youth & Culture; GOA Immigration & Customs Department; Cusinart Resort & Residences (Spa by Cuisinart); Malliouhana (An Auberg Resort); Anguilla Garden Centre; Straw Hat; Hibernia; Grands Vins de France; Tropical Distributors; Flow; Digicel; Veya; Classiq Carpentry; Funtime Charters; Ani Private Resorts; JW Proctors; Nikhil’s Fashion & MEPITS Solutions. Each contribution was well received and made for an exciting end to 2019 for all the lucky winners who participated in the lucky draw raffle.
Klassique Academy would also like to thank the dancers and parents for their continued support and commitment to the Academy. Special thanks are extended to Ms. Tania Rydon for going above and beyond to acquire contributions from our community partners and to its Artistic Director, Mr. Isaiah Luther, for another excellent choreography.
The group returned to Anguilla on Tuesday 31 December 2019. Viewing of the performance will be made available on the Klassique’s social media channels very soon.
