THE VALLEY, Anguilla – November 7, 2019 – Anguilla cyclists, Sherwin Osborne, Hasani Hennis, Elroy Laud, Denroy Gumbs and Claude Richardson, represented the island at the 2019 Caribbean Cycling Championships which was held in Havana, Cuba, from November 1-4, 2019.
The event which comprised a 34.2km Individual Time Trial race on Saturday, November 2, saw Anguilla’s Hasani Hennis capturing third place in a time of 47:03:156, behind 2nd Place, Abner Gonzalez of Puerto Rico with a time of 45:57:311. Kaden Hopkins of Bermuda captured 1st Place in 45:16:629 minutes. These youngsters, all Under 23, walked away with both the Under 23 positions and the overall positions for the time trial event, each taking home two medals. Claude Richardson also displayed an exceptional performance for the time trial amidst some setbacks.
The evening following the time trial, the Annual General Meeting and elections for the Caribbean Cycling Federation were held and Anguilla’s President, Sharon Lowe, was elected to the executive body.
On Sunday, November 3, was the much-anticipated Road Race where 89 cyclists started. However, Anguilla was not as successful during the road race but the cyclists gave their best, based on the circumstances. Gold for the road race went to Cuba’s Nodarse Felix, Silver to Quiroz Oscar of Belize and Bronze to Larry Lutin of Guadeloupe.
Other participating countries at this year’s event were Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Belize, Bermuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Curacao, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent & Grenadines, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, host country Cuba and, for the first time, Turks & Caicos Islands.
Anguilla’s Team Manager, Calvert Fleming, spoke highly of Anguilla’s performance at the event and of the unity of the team. He stated it was a first for some members of the team who did quite well as rookies in a competition of such caliber – one of the highest rated in the Caribbean.
