On Saturday July 27th, 2019, the Department of Education, represented by Tourism Education Coordinator (TEC), Mrs. Candis Niles, was honoured to join with parents, friends and supporters of the ALHCS’ Hospitality Start program for the 4th Annual “I AM Hospitality Mixer”, a social evening event which permitted the fifth form students to display their knowledge, skills and attitude in a real world hospitality setting, as they welcomed guests to the Songbird Villa in Rendezvous, and starting with a specially created Welcome Cocktail, wowed guests with their preparation, plating and service of gourmet tapas and carefully selected wines. Student Bartenders and Wait Staff were professionally attired in the standard server uniform of Black bottoms and crisp white tops accentuated by formal Black bowties, while Student Chefs were professionally adorned in Chef jackets and caps. Various students were tasked with informing guests of the ingredients of the delectable menu items, and the descriptions of the wine, thus affording them the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills.
The technical execution of the evening was carried out under the eagle eyes and effective coaching of ALHCS Hospitality and Culinary instructor, Ms. La Toya Mathews and Industry Service and Wine Expert, Mr Jerdell Lake.
Music for the 2 hour event was provided by DJ Kue, adding to the creation of a thoroughly enjoyable ambience, while evening entertainment was provided by “T” The Poet T’arah Niles and the sultry voice of Alysha Carty to further add to the mood of sophisticated elegance.
The DoE salutes the students and all the partners who worked with them to make this event a successful and meaningful one. Our students and our industry are richer by events of this nature, which allow them to put their theoretical knowledge into practice, as they demonstrate what genuine service excellence feels and looks like.
