With the increasing costs of tertiary education, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus is highlighting its affordable and fexible pathways to personal and professional development. “In addition to providing a world-class, accredited education, the UWI Open Campus provides individuals with the flexibility to continue their academic development while maintaining their employment, family and other commitments,” says Manager for the UWI BOT Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks.
“Students can proceed at their own pace by enrolling as full-time, part-time, or ‘specially admitted’ students in the Management, Education, Banking and Finance, Social Sciences, Sports, Tourism and Hospitality and other programmes. This is particularly appealing to young entrepreneurs and other professionals who want to build their businesses or careers while acquiring the academic certification, as well as for those who want to remain at home with their families,” the UWI Representative noted.
“Our students also have the option to move across campuses, so young persons who may start out in the Open Campus can also experience the residential campuses like Cave Hill or Mona, if they wish. Some students also opt to take advantage of international internships, and as we would have noted, they also have the opportunity to experience and be involved in University-wide activities like the UWI Games.”
“We are excited about our growing numbers and the ever-increasing number of options in the Certificate, Diploma, Associates, Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral Degree programmes, as well as our local face to face professional development offerings,” Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks pointed out. The Open Campus is dedicated to bringing the University to us in the non-residential campus areas of the region and applicants are constantly amazed at how affordable it is. Consider for example, that a Bachelors’ degree at the UWI Open Campus can cost less than US$11,000.00 from start to finish, while the Masters’ and Doctoral programmes average US$8,000.00 and US$20,000.00 respectively. The other programmes are obviously less and students can use our payment plans and ‘pay as they go’ options”, the Anguillian-based Manager pointed out.
The University is also encouraging persons in the private and public sector to take advantage of the University’s Special Admittance which allows graduates and non-graduates to enrol in ‘one-off’ courses of interest for their professional development; and the Prior Learning Assessment Programme, which allows them to translate their on-the-job experience into University credits. These credits can then be used towards a certificate or degree programme.
The deadline for applications for the 2019/2020 academic year is 30th June 2019 and interested persons can visit the University’s website at http://www.open.uwi.edu/programmes or contact the local UWI Open Campus Site at anguilla@open.uwi.edu (497-8156) to explore the available opportunities for achieving their educational goals.
