In an effort to support the development of the creative arts industry in Anguilla, the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACOCI) organised and hosted a short workshop focused on music, media and business development. The workshop was led by Ms. Sabra Richardson, Business Consultant, with assistance from Mr. Darius James, Founder of the Anguilla Music Academy. It was held on April 11th from 5 pm – 7 pm at the ACOCI Conference Room. Ms. Richardson and Mr. James both attended a regional OECS business initiative workshop which focused on Caribbean culture as a marketable business.
The interactive and high energy session explored a range of topics including the importance of identifying your target audience, building a strong team and marketing your business locally and internationally. Several leading local musical practitioners, from different music genres including reggae, rap and gospel, were in attendance.
The lively session was very well received by the participants, with many sharing their own experiences growing within the industry, both locally and internationally, and imparting invaluable advice to their fellow peers. One participant expressed the importance of local artists collaborating to build a platform that supports the development of the musical arts – as a viable and marketable business within Anguilla and the region. Another participant identified that to succeed in business, as an artist, you need to understand your brand and your value and be willing to put in the work and dedication necessary to grow your business. This includes travelling and performing, networking, collaborating and marketing your brand.
Given the positive feedback from the workshop, the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce will be hosting another ‘The Business of Music’ workshop later in the year. Topics to be explored include generating royalties for your music, understanding the new revenue streams for the business, and how consumers in the region can support local/regional artists. All artists, performers, music producers, artist managers, agents, event promoters and music publishers, are invited to attend. Be sure to follow ACOCI on Facebook for updates @AnguillaChamberCommerce.
The Anguilla Chamber of Commerce continues to offer valuable services such as these workshops for its members and the general public. The Chamber would like to thank all who participated in this workshop and invite all members to take advantage of all opportunities to invest in personal and professional development.
Looking forward, the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce will continue to offer support and valuable opportunities to its members. The Chamber of Commerce extends an invitation to all businesses and entrepreneurs to become members of ACOCI.
