Anybody who witnessed the fervour of the inter-house athletic Sports Day competition of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, and the enthusiasm the events generated, could only have been greatly impressed.
This is especially so given the trauma the competing students experienced during Hurricane Irma, the disruption of their classes and studies, and their efforts to rebound.
On Thursday, February 21, the athletes from the five houses began their competition with the cross-country running race from The Farrington to the Ronald Webster Park. This afforded them the usual opportunity to score some well-needed points to eventually determine the Sports Day winner on Tuesday, February 26.
The Sports Day opening ceremony on the Webster Park was chaired by Teacher and Pink House enthusiast, Avonelle Griffith, and included performances by students of the school’s Music Department.
In declaring open the Sports Day event, Permanent Secretary, Education, Mrs. Chanelle Petty Barrett, said: “Today is arguably the most anticipated day on the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School’s calendar. I am certain that those of us gathered here can already feel the excitement in the air. Many of the athletes have awaited this day with great anticipation because it is the day when they get the opportunity to prove that they are the best – and their house is the best. Many others are here to be a part of the fun and excitement, and to support their friends and their houses.”
Among other matters, the Permanent Secretary told the athletes: “Excellence comes with practice. When you consistently do little things well, you will attain excellence in bigger things. When you compete you must give your best effort every single time. In doing this, you will set high standards for yourself which you will seek to improve upon at each event. The end result will be excellence in your field.”
She continued: “Always demonstrate good sportsmanship. Whether you experience victory or defeat, do so gracefully and always acknowledge the efforts of your competitors. This simple acknowledgement signifies your respect for yourself and others.”
Flow Anguilla was the main sponsor of the Sports Day events. Speaking on behalf of the company, the Commercial Manager, Mrs. Jade Reymond-Richardson, said Flow was delighted to continue its longstanding Sports Day sponsorship. She urged the athletes to compete fairly and hard and to respect each other.
The final scores of the Sports Day events were: Yellow House 837 points; Orange House: 701; Purple House, 666; Maroon House, 609; and Pink House, 571 points.
