As can be seen herein this week’s newspaper – from the increased number of highly-successful Anguillian students, including boys, in the recent CXC exams -Anguilla has every reason to be proud of their sterling performance. A prolonged round of congratulations is especially due to them – not forgetting the other Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School students who have also done well in the examinations, though at a lower level.
The Ministry of Education was the first to offer its congratulations to the students who excelled in the SCEC,CAPEand CCSLC Examinations. Minister of Education, the Hon. Edison Baird, issued a press release expressing his Ministry’s delight with the results.
“The Ministry of Education offers its congratulations to the students of the ALHCS who excelled in the recent Caribbean Examinations Council Examinations,” he stated. He continued as follows:
“When close to, and in some cases, 100% passes in 15 CSEC subject areas and 23 CAPE Unit areas can be achieved, commendation must be given to the Principal and staff of the ALHCS for their extensive efforts in preparations for these exams. Parents, guardians and external tutors must also be commended for their overall contribution and support in this process.
“A number of accomplishments and unique occurrences which have arisen this year must be highlighted. The Ministry notes that at CSEC the boys are making their presence felt with 8 of the top 13 CSEC performances or 62%, being boys. For the first time a record number of subject entries by individual students is seen. This year, for the first time as well, there were entries in Theatre Arts, indicating the offering of a more diversified curricula and alternative career paths.
“The Ministry continues to monitor the performance in Mathematics at CSEC, as the area of Math, Science and Technology is a key priority area, outlined in the Education Development Plan (EDP) for 2010 to 2015 and the focus for this year. Though performance is still relatively low and there is much room for improvement, the 6% increase in pass rate over last year is encouraging. The performance in some Science and Technology areas is however commendable. While the focus is on Math, Science and Technology, the Ministry is however concerned that gains made in English must be maintained in an effort to improve literacy levels.
“At CAPE an increase in the number of candidates accessing post- secondary education is seen. This is a good indication that investments in theAnguillaCommunity Collegeand further study have been good ones. Efforts must be made, however, to ensure that an increase in quantity does not reflect a decrease in quality, and that high levels of performance both staff and students, are retained at all times.
“An increase in the number of entries at CCSLC was seen, as well, with improved performance at Mastery level. This is an indication of increased acceptance and recognition of the significance of this examination in highlighting basic competences.
“The Ministry of Education is quite pleased to recognise the accomplishments and positive behaviours and attitudes of many of our young people.”
